Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses the task only partially and falls short of the required minimum length of 150 words, containing only 137 words. While the candidate attempts to summarise the main changes between the two maps, such as the introduction of roundabouts, the bus station, and the new public car park, the information is somewhat limited and lacks sufficient extension. The overview is partially present at the beginning, but key spatial relationships and comparative elements are underdeveloped or imprecise. To reach a higher band, the response must meet the word count requirement, provide a clearer and more comprehensive overview of the overall changes, and develop the description of the modifications more fully.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

The text presents some organisation with an introductory overview and subsequent body details, but there is no clear overall progression across the piece. Paragraphing is not properly utilised, as the entire response is clumped into a single block of text rather than being divided into an introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. Furthermore, cohesive devices are inadequate or misused, with several missing spaces after punctuation marks and mechanical transitions such as 'According to whhat is shown' and 'In addition'. Referencing is also occasionally unclear. To improve, the writer should structure the response into distinct paragraphs and employ a wider, more accurate range of cohesive devices to guide the reader logically through the information.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is limited but minimally adequate to convey basic information about the maps, featuring terms like 'development', 'roundabout', and 'car park'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'devlopment', 'whhat', 'boundry', and 'establish' instead of 'established', which occasionally cause strain for the reader. The range of vocabulary is restricted and relies heavily on repeating words directly from the prompt. To achieve a higher band, the candidate needs to expand their lexical range by incorporating less common vocabulary with greater precision, while paying closer attention to word forms and accurate spelling.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response demonstrates a limited range of grammatical structures, relying mostly on simple sentences alongside a few faulty attempts at complex ones. There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including missing articles ('linked to city hospital', 'on eastern side'), preposition misuse ('in 4 years in between 2007 to 2010'), subject-verb agreement issues ('there was a significant changes'), and persistent punctuation errors such as missing spaces after commas and periods. These frequent errors cause some difficulty for the reader. To improve, the writer must focus on mastering basic sentence structures, ensuring correct article and preposition usage, and improving punctuation control.
