Student answer (Band 6.0)

The two maps illustrate the road acess to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

Overall, it can be seen that the City Hospital has developed road acess significantly with new roundabout for better traffic mangement.

In 2007, the hospital road connected city road to hospital with 6 bus stop in both right and left side. In northern side, the City hospital was situated surrounded by ring road. On the southeast corner a car park stood for both staff and public near bus stop.

By 2010, the hospital road connection was significantly enhanced with new 2 roundabout. Bus stops were demolished to built a huge bus station on the left of hospital road, while staff car park extended. The roundabout connected city road , bus station , hospital road and hospital to control the traffic. The hospital and ring road were unchanged but on the east of ring road a huge carpark for public was built.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by outlining the main features of the hospital road access in both 2007 and 2010 and making relevant comparisons. An overall trend is provided at the beginning. However, the length requirement is not met, as the response contains 147 words, falling short of the 150-word minimum (with 8 words copied from the prompt excluded). Certain details, such as the exact positioning and changes in the car parks, are somewhat under-developed, and there are slight inaccuracies in reporting specific features like the layout of the bus stops.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a coherent overall arrangement, with a clear introduction, an overview paragraph, and separate body paragraphs for 2007 and 2010. Information and ideas are logically sequenced, moving clearly from the past layout to the newer modifications. However, cohesion can feel slightly mechanical or repetitive in places (for example, relying on basic time markers like 'In 2007' and 'By 2010'), and referencing could be smoother to establish a more seamless progression between sentences.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully communicating the main spatial and structural changes. The writer attempts some less common lexical items, such as 'enhanced', 'demolished', and 'management', but experiences some spelling and word-choice errors, including 'acess' instead of 'access', 'mangement' instead of 'management', and 'built' instead of 'build' or 'be built'. These errors do not impede communication, but they reflect a typical intermediate level of lexical control.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over past and present tense structures when contrasting the two years. However, there are noticeable errors in grammar and punctuation, such as missing articles ('with new roundabout', 'with new 2 roundabout'), pluralisation errors ('6 bus stop'), and minor punctuation spacing issues before periods. While these errors persist, they are infrequent enough that they rarely impede overall communication.
