Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

The response addresses the task only partially and contains notable inaccuracies regarding dates and features. The student refers to the years 2010 and 2015 rather than 2007 and 2010 as stated in the prompt. While an overview is attempted, it misinterprets several key developments, claiming that the area did not undergo major changes apart from a bus station, while overlooking the introduction of roundabouts and the splitting of staff and public parking areas. Some ideas are limited and under-developed, and the selection of main features lacks precision. To reach a higher level, the writer must carefully check the source data, correctly report the given years, and ensure that all major spatial changes are accurately identified and contrasted.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response shows some organization with basic paragraphing, but lacks clear overall progression and logical flow. While transitional words like 'Overall' and 'Therefore' are employed, cohesive devices are sometimes mechanical or repetitive. Referencing is occasionally unclear, such as the pronoun 'which' in 'which is then redeveloped', making it difficult to trace connections between sentences smoothly. The overall arrangement attempts to contrast the two maps, but the links between paragraphs feel disjointed. To improve, the student should use a wider variety of cohesive devices more accurately and ensure that ideas flow logically from one sentence to the next without abrupt shifts.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, but range is limited and contains noticeable errors that occasionally hinder clarity. Words and phrases such as 're-development', 'alloted', and 'southern-west' demonstrate an attempt to use specific vocabulary, but suffer from awkward hyphenation, spelling inaccuracies, or inappropriate word choice. Collocations are sometimes unnatural, such as 'alloted of car parkings'. To progress to a higher band, the writer needs to incorporate a more flexible and precise range of lexical items, pay closer attention to spelling and word forms, and use vocabulary specific to map descriptions more naturally.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writing displays a limited range of sentence structures, relying mostly on simple forms alongside faulty attempts at complex sentences. There are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation, including missing articles ('ring road was located'), incorrect prepositions ('in southern-west corner' instead of 'in the south-west corner'), and subject-verb agreement issues, such as 'The above given maps depicts' and 'main changes that is observed'. Punctuation errors, such as unnecessary spaces before commas, are also present. To achieve a higher score, the student must increase structural variety, ensure accurate verb-subject agreement, and improve control over articles and prepositions.
