Student answer (Band 5.0)

The maps illustrate the access of a road to a city hospital between 2007 and 2010.

Overall, map had a layout of a area of city hospital, some significant change can be seen as new area has been added and some has undergone redevelopment.

In 2007,city hospital was in the middle of the ring road and there was a car park for both staff and public in side southeast side of hospital road which is connected to ring road from city roam and westsouth has unoccupied area.

As for the year 2010, city hospital has experiences some minimal transformation as city hospital is remain the same as it was while bus station is added in a southwest which used to be a empty and park area for staff and public is different: for staff it was still in the side of hospital road and for public it was built on eastern side on ring road.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response attempts to address the task by comparing the maps of the city hospital in 2007 and 2010, but the information is only partially covered and lacks sufficient detail. While an overall trend is attempted in the second paragraph, it is expressed rather vaguely ('map had a layout of a area'). Key features such as the addition of roundabouts, the relocation of the public car park, and the reconfiguration of the bus station are either missed or described with limited clarity. Furthermore, the selection of data is incomplete, leading to an underdeveloped response that touches on the task requirements without fully developing the main features and comparisons.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The text demonstrates some organization with basic paragraphing and introductory signals such as 'Overall' and 'In 2007', but there is a lack of clear overall progression. The movement of ideas between sentences feels disjointed, and cohesive devices are sometimes inadequate or mechanical. For instance, referencing is occasionally unclear, as seen in phrases like 'which is connected to ring road from city roam and westsouth has unoccupied area', making the spatial relationships difficult to follow. Paragraph boundaries are present, but the internal logical flow requires tighter control to guide the reader smoothly through the spatial comparison.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

Vocabulary use is limited and minimally adequate for the task. The student attempts some topic-specific terms such as 'transformation', 'redevelopment', and 'car park', but also makes noticeable lexical and spelling errors that occasionally cause difficulty for the reader, such as 'city roam' instead of 'City Road' and 'westsouth' instead of 'west and south'. Phrasing tends to be repetitive and relies heavily on basic descriptors like 'empty and park area'. To improve, the writer needs to incorporate a wider range of precise geographical vocabulary and ensure correct word forms and collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The student uses a very limited range of sentence structures, relying mostly on simple or loosely coordinated clauses. Attempts at more complex sentences are frequently faulty, leading to awkward constructions and run-on sentences, such as 'As for the year 2010, city hospital has experiences some minimal transformation as city hospital is remain the same as it was while bus station is added in a southwest...' There are frequent errors in verb tense consistency, subject-verb agreement, articles, and prepositions within grammatical patterns. These frequent errors can cause difficulty for the reader and obscure the precise meaning of the comparisons.
