IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The maps compare the structural changes about Cityu Hospital that took place in between 2007 and 2010 (or proposed changes for the future).

Overall, the area underwent moderate development, shifting from a residential layout to a commercial zone. The most notable modification was to separate staff and public car park below the city hospital. In the year 2010 public car park is on the right side of city hospital.

In the western part of the City Hospital in 2007, there was no any development below down the city hospital. By 2010, this was completely demolished by a Bus station. Adjacent to this, the building was modernized.

Meanwhile, in the eastern region, the the staff and public car park was seperated to each other. Furthermore, staff car park remain same below the city hospital and public car park is on the right side of city hospital. And a bus stop changes to rouyndabout.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the broad change over time and mention several relevant features, including the bus station, the separation of the car parks and the new public car park. However, the overview is not fully accurate: the maps show changes to hospital access, not a shift from a residential layout to a commercial zone. Some details are also unclear or incorrect. The bus station replaced the bus stops along Hospital Road, rather than development below the hospital being demolished, and the roundabouts were added at the road junctions; a bus stop did not change into a roundabout. The response also omits the key changes to Hospital Road and the new public car park’s access from Ring Road. A more precise overview and accurate comparison of the main features would make the report more complete and developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a basic paragraph structure, moving from an overview to descriptions of the western and eastern areas. This gives the reader some sense of organisation, and linking expressions such as “Overall” and “Meanwhile” help signal transitions. However, progression is weakened by unclear references and repeated information. For example, the public car park is described as being “on the right side” in both the overview and the final paragraph, while “Adjacent to this” does not make clear which feature is being referred to. The contrast between 2007 and 2010 is not consistently organised, and some sentences combine several changes without showing their relationship. Grouping the main changes by access route or by year, and using clearer references, would improve the flow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some relevant vocabulary for describing maps, including “western part,” “eastern region,” “separated” and “bus station.” This shows an attempt to use language suited to spatial changes. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate, which sometimes makes the description difficult to interpret. “Structural changes about” is not a natural way to introduce the maps, and “moderate development” and “commercial zone” do not accurately describe the changes shown. There are also spelling errors such as “Cityu,” “seperated” and “rouyndabout.” Aim for precise map vocabulary and check spelling; terms such as “access,” “junction,” “replaced” and “designated” would help describe the changes more accurately.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt a mixture of simple sentences and longer structures, including “Meanwhile, in the eastern region…” and “Furthermore…,” but control is inconsistent. Errors in articles, agreement, tense and sentence construction occur often enough to make some statements awkward or unclear. Examples include “there was no any development,” “the the staff and public car park was seperated,” and “staff car park remain same.” The opening sentence also has an unclear time construction: “that took place in between 2007 and 2010.” Use past tense consistently when describing changes, check singular and plural agreement, and avoid adding unnecessary articles. Short, accurate comparisons such as “The shared car park became a staff car park” would provide a clearer foundation before attempting more complex sentences.
