IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The two maps compare how the road access to a city hospital changed from 2007 to 2010.
Overall, it is clear that the road underwent several significant changes, including relocation of public and private (staff) car park, a combined construction of bus station, the addition of two roundabouts for improved traffic movement.
In 2007, there were six separate bus stations three on each side of the hospital road. The combined car park for the hospital staff and public was on eastern side of the hospital road, just behind the bus stations.
In 2010, the road underwent significant changes. First was the construction of the roundabouts on each side of the hospital road, one connected to the ring road and the other to the city road. A combined bus station had been constructed by replacing six segreggated bus stations to the western side of the hospital road. Two separate car parks were also built near the hospital. A car park to the north-eastern side of the hospital was built for the public, whereas the one towards southern side designated for the hospital staff.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
The response gives a clear overview of the main changes and accurately reports the key developments: the six individual bus stops were replaced by a bus station, two roundabouts were added, and the shared car park became separate staff and public facilities. The locations are mostly well described, including the public car park to the north-east and the staff car park beside Hospital Road. This is a strong, well-focused account. To make the description more fully precise, clarify that the new public car park is accessed from Ring Road, and describe the bus station’s connections to the two ends of Hospital Road. The phrase “on each side of the hospital road” is also less exact than identifying the roundabouts at its intersections with Ring Road and City Road.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The information is arranged in a clear progression: an introduction, an overview, and separate descriptions of the two years. This makes the comparison easy to follow, and sequencing phrases such as “In 2007” and “In 2010” guide the reader effectively. The overview also groups the major changes rather than listing every detail. Some linking is less smooth within the final paragraph: “First was the construction” and “A combined bus station had been constructed” create a somewhat list-like sequence, while “Two separate car parks were also built” introduces another feature without explaining its relationship to the earlier shared facility. Use more varied comparison links and connect each change explicitly to its 2007 arrangement.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
The response uses a suitable range of map vocabulary, including “relocation,” “construction,” “designated,” and “eastern side,” and the reader can understand the main changes. There are, however, several imprecise or awkward choices that limit flexibility and naturalness. “Bus stations” is inaccurate for the individual bus stops in 2007, and “combined construction” does not express the intended idea naturally. “Segreggated” is misspelled, while “private (staff) car park” is less precise than the map’s label. Choose exact labels from the map and use natural collocations such as “a bus station was built” and “the shared car park was divided into separate facilities.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You use a mix of sentence forms, including a complex overview sentence and clauses that compare locations, and the meaning remains clear throughout. Some grammatical errors and awkward constructions persist. In “relocation of public and private (staff) car park,” the singular noun needs an article or plural form; “on eastern side” and “to the western side” also need “the.” The sentence beginning “First was the construction” is an incomplete or unnatural inversion, and “the other to the city road” lacks a clear parallel structure. The final sentence would be more accurate as “the one to the south was designated for hospital staff.” Aim to make articles and parallel phrasing consistent while retaining your range of sentence structures.
