The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The two maps illutrates the arrangement of road access to the hospital in 2007 and 2010.
Overall, the road has been developed in recent years. New public car parking is constructed on the east side. Two new round abouts also been erected. Furthermore, a new bus station has also been built.
In 2007, the City hospital was surrounded by ring road, with hospital road running south from Ci t y hospital to city road. A bus stop was located on the southern of the city. Parking area for staff and public was available on the reastern side, just below the City hospital.
However, in 2010 the road has been considerabely redesigned. Two new round abouts are made, one joins the city road to the new bus station which is constructed on the western side. Meanwhile, the other round about join the hospital road to the city hospital and its one exits connects the hospital road with bus station. An additional car park facility was established on the eastern side of City hospital. The staff car park area remaind unchanged. Moreover another round about is also constructed on the eastern side of the city. The ring road which surrounds the City hospital remained largely unchanged, retaining its original layout throughout the period.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the main changes and provide an overview, noting the new public parking, bus station and roundabouts. You also compare the original shared car park with the later staff-only facility. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear: in 2007 there were several bus stops on both sides of Hospital Road, not a single stop “on the southern” side. In 2010, the bus station is west of Hospital Road and connects to it; the roundabouts are at the Ring Road and City Road junctions, rather than one joining City Road to the bus station. The claim that another roundabout was built east of the city is unsupported. More precise descriptions of these locations would make the account more complete and reliable.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and separate descriptions of the two years, followed by a comparison. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “However,” and “Moreover” help signal the progression. This gives the account a coherent arrangement, though some connections are mechanical or do not accurately express the map relationships. For example, “Meanwhile” introduces the roundabout description without clarifying how it relates to the previous point, and “Moreover” precedes an unsupported additional roundabout. The long, disrupted spacing in “Ci t y … hospital” also interrupts reading. Grouping the 2010 changes by location and using clearer references to the northern and southern junctions would improve flow and cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of map-related vocabulary, including “surrounded,” “redesigned,” “constructed,” “retaining,” and “layout.” These choices help communicate the main developments, and the meaning is generally understandable. However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or repetitive: “round abouts are made” is less natural than “roundabouts were added,” while “car parking is constructed” would be better expressed as “a public car park was added.” There are also spelling errors, including “illutrates,” “reastern,” “considerabely,” and “remaind.” Use the map’s labels consistently—such as “bus stops,” “bus station,” and “staff car park”—and check spelling and word forms to make descriptions more precise.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and more complex sentences, including the overview and the final clause about the Ring Road “retaining its original layout.” Most ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors affect accuracy. For example, “Two new round abouts also been erected” is missing an auxiliary verb, and “one round about join” has a subject–verb agreement error. Tense control is also inconsistent: the maps show changes between two past dates, so “has been developed” and “are made” should generally be expressed in the past. The sentence beginning “Meanwhile” has an unclear structure around “one exits connects.” Practise past-tense descriptions and check agreement, articles and sentence construction; this will make your varied structures more controlled.
