IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The two maps shows the traffic circulation upgrade to a city hospital in 2001 and 2010.

Overall, In 2007, a single road (Ring Road) provided the only access point to a shared parking lot for both staff and the public. But in 2010, it shared two enterances into the public and staff parking lot separately. Additionally, the bus stop was too far from hospital in 2007, that shifted to the opposite of staff car parking in 2010, making it much easier for the patients and visiters arriving from bus.

Moreover, In 2007, parking area was not enough for staff and public both, while in 2010 by separating it it's an ease for both of them. It's main hospital road also enhanced by building a roundabout to reduce accidental chances.

Furthermore, In 2007, the hospital road connected directly to the busy city road, creating a high risk of accidents. By 2010, a new roundabout was added to safely connect the roads and improve traffic safety.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the broad changes between the maps, including the separation of staff and public parking and the addition of roundabouts. However, several details are inaccurate or unclear: the maps show 2007 and 2010, not 2001 and 2010; the bus stops were replaced by a bus station west of Hospital Road, not moved opposite the staff car park; and the new public car park is accessed from Ring Road. The overview also says there were “two entrances” to the parking lots, which does not clearly describe the layout. Your comments about parking capacity and accident risk are not established by the maps. To strengthen the response, report the physical changes precisely and avoid unsupported explanations.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has an overall sequence, moving from a general comparison to parking, bus access and road safety, and linking expressions such as “Overall,” “Moreover” and “Furthermore” help signal these stages. However, the progression is weakened by repeated points about parking and roundabouts, while the key map changes are not grouped into a clear, systematic comparison. Some connections are difficult to follow, particularly “Additionally, the bus stop was too far from hospital in 2007, that shifted…” and the repeated discussion of the southern roundabout. Use a concise overview followed by one paragraph on parking and bus facilities and another on road layout. Clearer references to each map feature would make the relationships easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some relevant topic vocabulary, including “Ring Road,” “shared parking lot,” “roundabout” and “traffic safety,” so the main subject is generally understandable. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or informal for a map description: “traffic circulation upgrade,” “two enterances,” “bus stop was too far,” and “it’s an ease” do not express the changes precisely. There are also spelling errors such as “visiters” and “enterances.” Aim for neutral, descriptive language rather than claims about convenience or safety that the maps do not demonstrate. More precise terms for locations and changes would improve clarity and make the vocabulary more suitable for IELTS Academic Task 1.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mixture of simple statements and longer sentences, including clauses beginning with “while” and “By 2010,” but some grammatical errors make the descriptions unclear. For example, “The two maps shows” has a subject–verb agreement error, and “In 2007, a single road … provided the only access point” does not accurately express the map relationship. The sentence “the bus stop was too far from hospital in 2007, that shifted…” joins clauses incorrectly, while “by separating it it's an ease” has an unclear structure and reference. Capitalisation after “Overall” and “Moreover” is also inconsistent. Practise accurate comparisons using controlled past-tense sentences, and check agreement, articles and clause boundaries.
