Student answer (Band 5.5)
The given maps illustrates the improvement and development in road access to the City hospital from 2007 to 2010.
Overall, it can be seen that the new infrastructure of hospital gave more public space and public transport facility by constructed a new car parking area for staff's car only and a huge space alocated for public car park with 2 new round abouts for easy flow of vehicles. The movement of bus station from far from east to close to the hospital.
In details, a public car parking was constructed in the east direction seperately from the staff car parking area which used to be a common parking in year 2007. The hospital road renovated with two round abouts to ease vehicle access and one round about in the south-east direction with no connectivity visible at the moment. There was one big bus station used to be at far distance from the hospital in the east direction but now the new bus station established at the front of the hospital.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the main changes: the shared parking area became separate staff and public car parks, bus stops were replaced by a bus station, and roundabouts were added. These are relevant features and give the response a clear overall focus. However, some details are misread or unclear. The bus station was not moved from the east; it is west of Hospital Road, while the former individual stops were positioned along that road. The new public car park is east of Ring Road, not simply east of Hospital Road. The claim that a roundabout has “no connectivity” is also inaccurate: it is at the City Road junction. A more precise overview and accurate locations would make the account more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable structure, moving from an introduction and overview to details, and it uses basic signposting such as “Overall” and “In details.” The main changes are grouped together, so the reader can follow the general comparison. However, progression within the overview is weakened by unclear statements, particularly “The movement of bus station from far from east to close to the hospital,” which does not clearly describe the change. The final paragraph also combines several features without consistently distinguishing the 2007 and 2010 layouts. Use clearer time-based comparisons and link each change to its location—for example, explain that the bus stops disappeared and a station was built west of Hospital Road.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some task-relevant vocabulary, including “infrastructure,” “public transport,” “car parking,” and “roundabouts,” and the reader can generally identify the features being compared. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, such as “public space” for parking provision, “movement of bus station,” and “one big bus station used to be at far distance.” Spelling errors, including “alocated,” “seperately,” and “round abouts,” also reduce control. Aim for precise map vocabulary and natural combinations, such as “the bus stops were replaced by a bus station” and “a separate public car park was added.” This would improve clarity and show a more controlled range.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more extended sentence forms, including a comparison of the former shared car park with the new arrangement. However, errors in agreement, articles, verb forms, and sentence construction are frequent enough to make some statements difficult to interpret. For example, “The given maps illustrates” has subject–verb disagreement, while “by constructed” uses an incorrect verb form. “The hospital road renovated” is missing a passive auxiliary, and “The movement of bus station…” is not a complete, well-formed sentence. Practise accurate passive constructions for map changes (“was replaced,” “was added”) and check articles and plural forms. Clearer sentence boundaries would also help communicate the comparisons.
