IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The map depicts a contrast in the road access facility and numerous amenities being added and changed during the time duration of 2007 and 2010. Looking from an overall perspective, it is readily apparent that there has been numerous facilities being included over time in the south-west, south-east and particulary in the east direction of the map.

However, there are certain specific roads whose location has managed to remain unchanged for both the period of time namely ring road, city road and hospital road adaping to a minor change of inclusion of the roundabouts on its way in the year 2010.

Additionally, there has been a development of a brand new bus staion in the south west direction of the map intersecting with the two roundabout roads in the roadmap 2010 which was particulary situated in the both side edges of the hospital road in the case of 2007. Along with this, there has been a separate insertion of public car park facility in the north-east zone which earlier coexisted with the staff car parking in the south-east position.

The roadmap of both the years has managed to showcase timeline of diverse development in the passing era of changes.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the main change from bus stops to a bus station, the addition of roundabouts, and the separation of staff and public parking. You also note that the principal roads remain in place, giving the response a relevant overview. However, some details are unclear or inaccurate: the bus station is west of Hospital Road, but it is not described as being in the south-west, and the new public car park is on the east side of Ring Road rather than simply in the north-east zone. The account also omits that the former bus stops disappear and that the public car park has direct access from Ring Road. Develop these comparisons more precisely to make coverage more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable overall structure: an opening overview is followed by paragraphs describing roads and new facilities, and the ideas are generally relevant to the map comparison. Linking expressions such as “Additionally” and “Along with this” help connect points. However, the progression is sometimes difficult to follow because several changes are packed into long sentences, and references such as “its way” and “both side edges” are not immediately clear. The final sentence repeats the general idea of development without adding a specific comparison. Organise the body more clearly by grouping road changes together and parking and bus changes together, and use direct references to locations and features.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a reasonable range of vocabulary for describing change, including “remain unchanged,” “inclusion,” “development,” and “separate insertion.” These attempts show some flexibility, although several choices are unnatural or imprecise for map reporting. For example, “road access facility,” “timeline of diverse development,” and “coexisted with the staff car parking” make the description less direct, while “roadmap” is not the appropriate term for a map showing road layouts. There are also spelling errors, including “staion,” “particulary,” and “adaping.” Prefer concise, conventional expressions such as “road layout,” “was replaced by,” and “a new public car park was added,” and check spelling carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of sentence forms, including complex constructions with “while,” “which,” and “along with this,” and the main meaning is usually understandable. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly with agreement and sentence construction. For instance, “there has been numerous facilities” should use a plural verb form, and “for both the period of time” is not a well-formed phrase. The sentence beginning “Additionally” also has an unclear structure around “intersecting with the two roundabout roads,” making the relationship between the bus station and roads difficult to interpret. Use shorter, controlled sentences when describing locations, and check subject–verb agreement, articles, and clause connections.
