IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The given map illustrates the development of city hospital between 2007 to 2010.

Overall, it can be clearly seen that the old design has less transportation facility near hospital which has significantly changed in the modern layout. There are two roundabout developed along with a bus station and different parking division for staff and public.

To begin with, the ring road is connected with two roundabout in the south direction with a hospital road in the middle of it. On the southwest direction, there is a bus station which is not there in the year 2007. On the opposite side, there is a staff car park for hospital which was a bus stop before but they changed with the parking site.

In the northeast side, there is a public car park for those who visit in the hospital. As there are many changes occurred in the recent planning for making the visit of people convenient and time saving.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You identify the main transformation: the 2010 layout adds two roundabouts and a bus station, and separates staff and public parking. The overview also recognises that access and facilities changed, which gives the response a clear central focus. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear. The bus station is west of Hospital Road, but the staff car park was not simply a bus stop: it occupies the former shared car park, while the individual bus stops were removed. The public car park is east of the Ring Road, rather than clearly “in the northeast side.” The description of the road connections is also confusing. To strengthen the report, compare the two maps more precisely and explain the key changes in the car parks and bus facilities.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview and two detail paragraphs, with a sequence from general changes to locations. Linking phrases such as “Overall,” “To begin with” and “On the opposite side” help signal this organisation. However, progression becomes difficult to follow when the road layout is described as “two roundabout in the south direction,” and the relationship between the former bus stops and the staff car park is not made clear. The final sentence about convenience and saving time is not directly supported by the maps and interrupts the factual description. Grouping changes by feature—road access, bus facilities and parking—and using clearer references to each map would make the cohesion more effective.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a reasonable range of task-related vocabulary, including “ring road,” “bus station,” “staff car park” and “public car park,” and terms such as “development” and “layout” help describe change. Some word choices and collocations are imprecise, however: “different parking division” is unclear, “parking site” is vague, and “making the visit of people convenient and time saving” sounds unnatural. “Roundabout developed” also does not express the map change accurately. These choices do not prevent the reader from understanding the broad comparison, but they reduce precision. Aim for standard map-description phrases such as “was converted into,” “was added,” “located to the west of,” and “provided access to,” while avoiding unsupported claims about the purpose of the changes.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including the overview sentence beginning “Overall” and the clause “which is not there in the year 2007.” The main ideas are generally understandable, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “between 2007 to 2010” uses the wrong preposition pattern, and “There are two roundabout developed” has problems with number and verb form. The sentence beginning “As there are many changes occurred” combines clause structures incorrectly, while “which was a bus stop before” has an unclear reference. Tense use also shifts between present and past when describing the maps. Use past forms consistently for changes and check agreement, articles and sentence boundaries; this would make your varied structures more controlled.
