IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The two maps illustrate the availability of road to a city hospital from 2007 to 2010.This essay will highlight the main features and comparisons where required.

Overall, the two figures demonstrate the pathways which lead to medical center with slight differences. There is no modification in the architecture of hospital building but the sorroundings have undergone transformations.

In both pictures, city road was directly linked with the hospital route. Ring road was covering the main place in both cases but there was little change in this road in 2010.Public car park was present within two infrastructers but its position had been disturbed in the later.

There were no roundabouts in the path of hospital during 2007 but the two rings were observed between the city path and hospital route. The bus station was connected with both circles. The parking area for the staff had been changed during 2010. There was a separate public car park available in modified structure which was associated with the ring of hospital. However, numerous changes had seen in road access to medical institute from 2007 to 2010.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the broad change over time and include relevant features such as the new roundabouts, bus station and separate public car park. The overview also notes that the hospital building itself did not change, which is accurate, and that the surrounding access arrangements were altered. However, several details are unclear or inaccurate: in 2007 the two “rings” were not present; the roundabouts were added in 2010. The bus station was also introduced in 2010, rather than being connected to circles in 2007. The public car park was not present in both layouts: the original shared staff-and-public car park became a staff car park, while a new public car park was added beside Ring Road. Clarifying these comparisons and describing the bus stops’ removal would make the account more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, an overview and paragraphs describing changes, and the reader can follow its general focus. However, progression is weakened by repeated, broad statements such as “numerous changes had seen” and “slight differences,” which do not add specific information. Some links between ideas are also unclear: “There were no roundabouts … but the two rings were observed” conflicts with the earlier statement and does not establish which year is being described. The final paragraph combines several changes without a clear sequence. Organise the details by year or by feature, and use precise references such as “in 2010” and “the former shared car park” to make the comparisons easier to track.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some task-relevant vocabulary, including “roundabouts,” “bus station,” “staff car park” and “road access,” so the topic is generally identifiable. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, sometimes making the map details difficult to interpret. For example, “availability of road,” “main place,” “two rings,” and “the ring of hospital” do not clearly describe the roads or roundabouts. “The position had been disturbed” is also an unsuitable way to describe a car park’s relocation or redesignation. There are spelling errors in “sorroundings” and “infrastructers.” Prefer straightforward, precise map language—such as “road layout,” “roundabout,” “located beside,” and “was converted into”—rather than attempting unclear paraphrases.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including contrast with “but” and a relative clause in “which was associated with the ring of hospital.” The main ideas are usually recoverable, but some grammatical errors and punctuation problems remain. For example, “This essay will highlight” is followed immediately by a missing space after the full stop, and “There was little change in this road in 2010.Public car park” needs clearer sentence separation and an article. Tense and sentence construction are also inconsistent in “numerous changes had seen”; a passive form such as “numerous changes were made” is needed. Check articles, verb forms and punctuation, and use past simple consistently when reporting the two dated maps.
