IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The two maps show road access to a city hospital in two different years, 2007 and 2010. As shown in the maps, there was significant development in 2010 compared with 2007.

The ring road around the city hospital remained the same, but a few changes were made to the surrounding area. In 2007, there was a single car park for both staff and the public. However, in 2010, there were two separate car parks for staff and the public. The staff car park remained in the same location as it was in 2007, while the public car park was located beside the city hospital and connected to the ring road.

The bus stop was far from the city hospital in 2007, but by 2010, the bus station had been moved closer to the hospital road. In addition, a roundabout was added in 2010.

Meanwhile, the hospital road also underwent significant changes. In 2007, it was a straight road, whereas in 2010, two roundabouts were added to the hospital road, connecting it to the bus station.

Overall, considerable development took place between 2007 and 2010, particularly in terms of road access, parking facilities, and the bus station.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You identify the main overall change and cover the key areas: parking, bus facilities and road access. The distinction between the shared car park in 2007 and separate staff and public parking in 2010 is relevant, and you correctly note that the ring road remained unchanged and that two roundabouts were introduced. However, some details are inaccurate or underdeveloped. The public car park was not beside the hospital; it was east of the Ring Road, with access from that road. The bus stops were replaced by a bus station west of Hospital Road, rather than simply being moved closer to it. Also, the two roundabouts—at the Ring Road and City Road junctions—could be described more precisely. A more exact account of these locations would strengthen the overview and comparisons.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, paragraphs describing changes to parking and bus facilities, and a concluding overview. The sequence is generally easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “However,” “In addition,” and “Meanwhile” help signal contrasts and additions. The organisation is coherent, but some connections between details are not fully clear. For example, “The bus stop was far from the city hospital” does not specify which stops are meant, and “a roundabout was added” is followed by the more accurate statement that two were added, creating a slight inconsistency in the progression. Grouping the road changes together and explicitly comparing the two junctions would make the information flow more precisely and reduce repetition of the overall development point.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for describing map changes, including “remained,” “separate,” “located,” “connecting,” and “underwent significant changes.” These choices make the main developments understandable, and there are no spelling problems that interfere with meaning. However, some wording is repetitive or imprecise: “significant development” and “considerable development” repeat the same general idea, while “the bus stop” inaccurately treats several stops as one. “Moved closer” also suggests relocation rather than replacement by a bus station. More precise map vocabulary—such as “was replaced by,” “was situated to the west of,” and “junction”—would improve accuracy and flexibility. Take care to distinguish the Ring Road from the hospital itself when describing the public car park.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, and most sentences communicate the intended changes clearly. Past-tense forms are generally controlled, as in “was located” and “were added,” while contrast structures such as “whereas” and “while” help compare the maps. Some grammatical choices are less precise, particularly in “The bus stop was far from the city hospital,” where the singular noun does not match the multiple stops shown in 2007. The sentence “In addition, a roundabout was added” also conflicts with the later reference to two roundabouts. These issues do not prevent understanding, but careful checking of number and consistency would improve accuracy. You could also vary sentence structures further when describing locations and changes.
