IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The given maps present the layout of road access to a city hospital in the two different years 2007 and 2010 respectively.
Overall, the Ring road surrounding the city hospital remained same in both years, with only the side of it in the north of city hospital getting updated with roundabouts and other linkroads. A few changes are being made by shifting and building new the transport infrastructure like parkings and bus station.
In 2007, the Ring road around the hospital, was linked directly to the Hospital road, but in 2010, a roundabout in being introduced in the north side of hospital just and hence Ring road got linked with Hospital road through that roundabout. In 2007, City road was connected to Hospital road directly by intersecting it the middle. While in 2010, these two roads also connect through another roundabout.
The transport infrastucture in 2007 was just a single Car parking on the eastern side of Hospital road. But in 2010 a new public parking built in the east of Ring road and the previous parking left only for staff parking. A bus station is constructed in the west of hospital road that is connected to two roundabouts.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You give a clear overview of the main changes: the Ring Road remains, roundabouts are added at both ends of Hospital Road, and parking and bus facilities are reorganised. The details about the new public car park, the staff-only designation of the existing car park, and the bus station are relevant and broadly accurate. This covers the key features and makes comparisons across the two years. However, the overview says the northern side was updated, which underplays the changes at the southern junction, and “other linkroads” is vague. You also omit the removal of the individual bus stops and could describe the bus station’s connections more precisely. More balanced coverage of these changes would make the report more complete and precise.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and paragraphs describing road changes and transport facilities. The sequence from the road network to parking and bus provision is generally easy to follow, and contrasts such as “In 2007” and “in 2010” help orient the reader. However, cohesion is sometimes weakened by awkward or unclear links. The overview’s reference to the “side” updated is imprecise, and the sentence beginning “In 2007, the Ring road…” runs into the next sentence without a space after the full stop. Some information is also repeated rather than grouped efficiently. To strengthen progression, organise the comparison into clear themes—junctions first, then parking and bus facilities—and use concise linking phrases consistently.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a reasonable range of task-related vocabulary, including “surrounding,” “intersecting,” “infrastructure,” and “connected,” so the main changes are understandable. There are also attempts at more specific terms such as “roundabouts” and “staff parking.” However, several word choices and forms are inaccurate or unnatural: “parkings” should be “car parks,” “linkroads” is better expressed as “connecting roads,” and “a new public parking built” needs a more natural construction such as “a new public car park was built.” “Transport infrastructure” is repeated and could be varied with “facilities” or “provision.” Spelling slips such as “infrastucture” also reduce accuracy. More precise collocations and careful proofreading would improve control.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including comparisons with “while” and clauses describing how roads connect. The overall meaning is usually clear, but grammatical control is uneven, with errors in articles, verb forms, and sentence construction. For example, “remained same” needs an article (“remained the same”), while “a new public parking built” is missing an auxiliary verb (“was built”). The sentence “a roundabout in being introduced” has an incorrect verb form, and “by intersecting it the middle” lacks a necessary preposition. Punctuation also causes problems in the long sentence about the northern roundabout, including an unfinished phrase and a missing space after a full stop. Review sentence boundaries and check each clause for a complete, correctly formed verb.
