IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The maps demonstate how road approch to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

Overall, the biggest change was car park, it diveded into two parts public car park and staff car park. Another transmission was bus station which, developed the west side near Hospital Road.

To start with, City Hospital was surrounded by ring road on three sides in 2007. To the south, Hospital Road connected the hospital to City Road. On Hospital Road, there were six bus stops on each side. There was a combined car park for staff and public on the east side of Hospital Road at the corner of City Road.

On the other hand, in 2010, several major changes occurred. Firstly, two roundabouts were built on Hospital Road. One at the junction with Ring Road and another at the junction with City Road. This improved traffic flow. Secondly, the bus facilities were upgraded. The six small bus station were replaced by a large bus stop. Finally, the car parks were separated. The public car park was moved to the east side. Whlie, the staff car park remained on the south side.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the main changes, including the addition of two roundabouts, the replacement of roadside bus stops with a bus facility, and the separation of the car parks. The overview also gives the reader a useful sense of the redevelopment. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear: there were three bus stops on each side in 2007, not “six bus stops on each side,” and in 2010 these became a bus station, not a “large bus stop.” The public car park was newly located east of Ring Road, rather than simply “moved” there, while the staff car park remained east of Hospital Road, not on its south side. The claim that the changes improved traffic flow is not shown by the maps. More precise reporting of these features would strengthen coverage.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, a description of the earlier map, and a paragraph on the later changes. Sequencing expressions such as “To start with,” “Firstly,” and “Finally” help readers follow the account. However, the progression is sometimes mechanical, and the comparison between years could be integrated more clearly rather than presented as a list of changes. Some links are awkward or incomplete, particularly “Another transmission was bus station which, developed…” and “Whlie, the staff car park remained…”. The overview also combines several changes without clearly distinguishing the bus redevelopment from the car-park changes. Use clearer sentence connections and consistent comparisons to make the organisation more fluent.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some relevant map vocabulary, including “surrounded,” “junction,” “roundabouts,” and “separated,” and the reader can generally understand the changes you describe. However, spelling and word-choice errors are noticeable, including “demonstate,” “approch,” “transmission,” and “Whlie.” Some phrases are also imprecise or unnatural: “the biggest change was car park,” “large bus stop,” and “the staff car park remained on the south side.” In this task, accurate terms such as “bus station,” “public car park,” and “east of Hospital Road” are important because they identify the features and their locations. Aim for precise map-related vocabulary and check spelling and collocations before submitting.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex forms, and several sentences communicate the map information clearly, such as “City Hospital was surrounded by ring road on three sides in 2007.” However, errors in sentence construction and punctuation recur. “Overall, the biggest change was car park, it diveded into two parts…” joins two independent clauses with a comma, while “One at the junction with Ring Road…” is a fragment rather than a complete sentence. The clause “bus station which, developed…” is also incorrectly formed, and “The six small bus station were replaced” has a number-agreement problem. Practise complete sentences, relative clauses, and agreement, and use punctuation to separate ideas accurately. These improvements would make the comparisons easier to read.
