IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The first map demonstrate the road access to city hospital in 2007 while the second one shows the same hospital in 2010.

the city hospital is situated in the centerof the ring road but there are some alterations in the design of 2010 map when compared to the 2007. In year 2007, the hospital had the same area designated for staff and public car parking whereas in theyear 2010 the car park for the public has been shifted to east of the hospital building with the staff car park remaining in the same location as before.

Two roundabouts have been built one on the ring road to the south of the hospital and the other to the far end of the hospital road in between the city road. Bus station has been constructed to the west of staff car park which in 2007 had only bus stops on the both sides of the hospital road.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the main purpose of the maps and report several important changes, including the separation of staff and public parking, the construction of two roundabouts, and the replacement of bus stops by a bus station. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear: the public car park is on the east side of Ring Road, not simply east of the hospital building, and the staff car park remains east of Hospital Road. The roundabouts are at the Ring Road and City Road junctions, rather than one being at the “far end” of Hospital Road. You also omit the new public car park’s direct access from Ring Road. A clearer overview and more precise descriptions of locations would make the key changes more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response follows a generally logical order: it introduces the maps, compares the parking arrangements, and then describes changes to the road junctions and bus facilities. This gives the reader a coherent account of the main developments. However, the information is compressed into a single paragraph, and the overview is not clearly separated from the supporting details. Some linking is also awkward, particularly “whereas in theyear 2010,” while “which in 2007 had only bus stops” makes the reference to the bus station and the earlier layout less clear. Use distinct paragraphs for the overview and details, and connect each comparison explicitly to the relevant year to improve progression and cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of map-related vocabulary, including “designated,” “car parking,” “roundabouts,” and “constructed,” and the reader can understand the main changes. Some choices are imprecise or unnatural, however. “Shifted to east of the hospital building” does not accurately describe the public car park’s position, and “in between the city road” is an awkward way to identify a junction. “The same area designated for staff and public car parking” is also less precise than saying the car park was shared by staff and visitors. Aim for accurate location phrases and natural collocations, especially when describing access and junctions; this will make your comparisons clearer without requiring more elaborate vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a comparison with “whereas” and a relative clause beginning “which.” Most of the meaning remains understandable, but some grammatical errors are noticeable. For example, “The first map demonstrate” needs subject–verb agreement (“demonstrates”), and “the city hospital is situated” should begin with a capital letter. The phrase “in theyear 2010” contains a spacing error, while “one on the ring road … and the other to the far end” has an unclear prepositional construction. Check agreement, sentence openings, spacing, and prepositions, and make sure longer sentences have clear, parallel structures.
