IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The map illustrates the road access to a city hospital between 2007 and 2010.
Overall, the surroundings of hospital underwent significant redevelopment, with new area constructed and some existing features replaced.
In 2007, there was a bus stop on the hospital road, which was replaced by roundabout in 2010. Moreover, the bus station was made in the western side of hospital road, which was connected to both of the roundabouts one near the hospital and other on the city street.
Meanwhile, the car parking for public was also separated from staff parking, and it shifted to east of the city hospital in 2010. The gate was made in the eastern side of the caring center on the ring road for public vehicle parking. Although in 2007 the area was significant useful facilities, this was not well connected. Consequently, it was made more smooth and plugged in through two roundabouts, separate car parking for public, and a bas station.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You identify the main redevelopment and report several important changes: the bus stops were removed, a bus station was added, parking was separated by user, and two roundabouts were introduced. Your overview also recognises that the site changed substantially. Some details, however, are unclear or inaccurate: the 2007 map shows several bus stops along Hospital Road, not one, and the roundabouts are at the Ring Road and City Road junctions rather than “one near the hospital.” The public car park is east of the Ring Road, not simply east of the hospital. The claim that the area was “not well connected” is not clearly supported. To make the account more complete and precise, describe the road layout and the car parks’ locations directly, while avoiding unsupported evaluation.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable structure, moving from an introduction and overview to details about transport and parking. Paragraphing helps separate the general change from specific features, and connectors such as “Moreover” and “Meanwhile” signal relationships between points. However, progression within the detail paragraphs is sometimes difficult to follow because several changes are compressed into long sentences. For example, the sentence beginning “Moreover” combines the bus station’s location and its connections, while “Although in 2007…” introduces a contrast whose reference is unclear. Some linking expressions feel mechanical or do not establish a clear relationship. Group the information consistently—for example, first describe road and bus changes, then parking—and use clear references to the 2007 and 2010 maps.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “roundabout,” “bus station,” “public,” “staff parking,” and “Ring Road,” and you attempt more descriptive language such as “redevelopment.” This gives the response a suitable basic range. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, sometimes making the intended meaning less clear: “the caring center” appears to mean the hospital, “plugged in” is unsuitable for describing road access, and “a bas station” contains a spelling error. “The area was significant useful facilities” is also not a natural way to describe the site. Choose precise map vocabulary and familiar collocations, such as “facilities,” “access road,” and “was converted into,” and check spelling before submitting.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mixture of simple and complex sentences, including an overview sentence and a concessive clause beginning “Although.” The main changes are generally understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. Articles and plurals are missing or inconsistent in phrases such as “replaced by roundabout” and “a bus stop,” despite the map showing multiple stops. There are also problems with sentence construction and agreement in “the area was significant useful facilities,” and the final sentence has an unclear structure after “Consequently.” Prepositions and location patterns also need more control, as in “in the western side.” Practise forming accurate noun phrases and checking that each sentence has a clear subject and verb; simpler, well-controlled sentences would make the comparisons easier to understand.
