IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The maps below demonstrate the road access to the city hospital in 2007 compared to 2010.
At a cursory glance, bus stop is demolished to make a round about. Furthermore, staff and public car parking is now seperated. In addition to that, bus station is constructed right next to hospital road.
In 2007, there was a common parking for staff and public to the south-east of the city hospital. However, in 2010 for public a seperate entrance is provided. Subsequently, in 2007, there was bus stop on hospital road which has been now replaced by bus station. While hospital road still connects with the city road, in 2010, round abouts were constructed connecting city road and city hospital through hospital road.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify several important changes, including the separation of staff and public parking, the construction of a bus station, and the addition of roundabouts. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear: the bus stops were removed, not “demolished to make a round about,” and the public car park was newly located east of Ring Road rather than simply given a separate entrance. The overview is also brief, while the changes to road access and the bus facilities could be explained more fully. The response is 121 words, below the required 150, so it has limited space to select and report the main features adequately. Add precise comparisons and cover the new public car park and the bus station’s connections.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a generally understandable sequence: it begins with an overview and then compares the 2007 and 2010 layouts. Linking expressions such as “However,” “Furthermore,” and “In addition to that” help signal relationships between points. At times, though, the progression is mechanical, and some references are difficult to follow. For example, “bus stop is demolished to make a round about” does not clearly explain which features changed, while “Subsequently” does not express a clear time sequence in that sentence. Organise the report into a concise overview followed by a paragraph on road and transport changes and one on parking, using explicit references to each year and location.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “road access,” “parking,” “bus station,” “entrance,” and “roundabouts,” and the main meaning is generally clear. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “At a cursory glance,” although this is not a natural choice for describing a map. Some word choices and collocations are imprecise: bus stops were “removed” rather than “demolished,” and “common parking” would be better expressed as a shared car park. Spelling errors such as “seperated” and “round abouts” also reduce accuracy. Aim for precise map-reporting terms and check compound nouns and spelling.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex forms, including a contrast with “However” and a subordinate clause beginning “While hospital road still connects…”. Most sentences remain understandable, but some grammatical choices make the relationships between features less clear. For example, “In 2010 for public a seperate entrance is provided” has an awkward word order, and “there was bus stop” is missing an article. The phrase “round abouts were constructed connecting city road and city hospital” also needs a clearer grammatical link between the roundabouts and the roads. Use articles consistently, keep past-tense descriptions aligned with the map dates, and check sentence structure when adding location details.
