Student answer (Band 5.0)

The image compares the road connection to the city hospital in 2007 and 2018.

The city hospital is surrounded by the ring road. In 2007, in the south city hospital connects to the city road via hospital road, which had bus stops spaces on both sides and a parking space on the left side for hospital staff and people. Parking has access form the ring road only.

In 2010, we can see change in roads infrastructure. There are two roundabout in the east entrance of the hospital on the hospital road, which connect to the bus stop on the right and staff car park on the left. There is change in the parking plan both staff and pubic parking has their own spot. The general people parking point has been shifted to east side of the hospital on the ring road. both the parking are accessible form the rigg road.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You identify the broad change from the 2007 layout to the 2010 one, including the separation of staff and public parking and the replacement of bus stops with a bus station. However, key details are inaccurate or unclear: the maps show 2007 and 2010, not 2018, and the two roundabouts are on Hospital Road at its junctions with Ring Road and City Road, not at the hospital’s east entrance. The bus station is west of Hospital Road, rather than a bus stop on the right. The 2007 car park is east of Hospital Road and accessed from it, not accessible only from Ring Road. There is also no clear overview of the main changes. Select the major developments accurately and summarise them before describing details.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response follows a basic chronological order, first describing 2007 and then 2010, and the opening comparison gives the reader a clear topic. Some linking is also attempted through phrases such as “In 2007” and “In 2010.” However, the progression is weakened by unclear references and abrupt transitions. For example, “which connect to the bus stop on the right and staff car park on the left” makes the locations difficult to follow, while “both the parking” begins a new point without a clear connection to the previous sentence. The response would be easier to follow if divided into a brief overview and two organised detail sections, with each feature’s location stated consistently in relation to Hospital Road or Ring Road.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some relevant map vocabulary, including “ring road,” “roundabout,” “bus stops,” and “staff car park,” so the reader can recognise the topic and several features. There are also attempts at more specific phrases such as “road infrastructure” and “parking plan.” However, word choice and spelling errors are noticeable, including “spaces” for bus stops, “pubic,” “rigg,” and “form.” Some expressions are imprecise or unnatural, such as “general people parking point” and “in the east entrance.” Use standard map-description collocations and precise labels from the visual, such as “public car park,” “bus station,” “to the west of,” and “at the junction of.” This would make the description clearer and more accurate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and longer sentences, including a relative clause in “which had bus stops spaces on both sides,” and the main timeline is generally understandable. However, errors in sentence structure, agreement, articles, and punctuation occur frequently enough to make some relationships unclear. Examples include “in the south city hospital connects,” “There are two roundabout,” and “both the parking are accessible.” The sentence beginning “There are two roundabout” also has a confusing structure that obscures what the roundabouts connect. Capitalisation and sentence boundaries are inconsistent, particularly in “ring road. both the parking.” Practise accurate plural forms and subject–verb agreement, and use shorter, complete sentences when describing locations.
