IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The maps illustrate the access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

Overall, it could be seen that there is a significant difference between both the years. The city hospital in 2010 had extra new features from that of hospital in 2007 with all good facilities particularly in transport and parking. The main building has the same location, while only the facilities has been added to improve the accessibility.

In 2007, the hospital was surrounded by ring road with the hospital building situated in the center. The main entrance is located at the southern part of the map, and 6 bus stops are being either side of the road of hospital with three on each other, there is a parking slot at the southeast side of hospital for staff and public to park.

By 2010, the same ring road has been surrounded with the hospital placed in the middle and there is a separate public car park at the east facing. Furthermore, the transport facilities were modified, the original bus stops were placed by a roundabout system to improve the traffic flow.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You identify the main overall change: the hospital remains in place while access and parking facilities are altered. You also accurately report the 2007 ring road, the six bus stops, and the shared staff-and-public car park, and note the new public car park in 2010. This gives the response a relevant, clear foundation. However, some important 2010 details are omitted or misreported: the bus stops were replaced by a bus station, not by a roundabout system; two roundabouts were added at the ends of Hospital Road. The existing car park also became staff-only. The overview’s claim of “all good facilities” is vague rather than a precise summary. Including these changes and describing the access layout more fully would make the account more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear four-part structure: introduction, overview, and separate descriptions of the two years. The chronological order makes the comparison easy to follow, and transitions such as “In 2007” and “By 2010” help signal the shift between maps. However, some links between ideas are awkward or unclear. For example, “the same ring road has been surrounded with the hospital” does not clearly explain the layout, while the final sentence combines the bus-stop change and roundabouts in a way that obscures what replaced what. The overview also repeats the idea that facilities were added without identifying the key changes. Use clearer referencing and organise the 2010 details into distinct changes to improve progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a suitable range of map-related vocabulary, including “surrounded,” “situated,” “southeast,” “separate public car park,” and “transport facilities.” These choices generally communicate the locations and changes, and the meaning remains understandable. Some expressions, however, are imprecise or do not fit the map description naturally: “all good facilities,” “parking slot,” “east facing,” and “roundabout system” either sound informal or mislabel the features. “Main entrance” is also not clearly established by the map. Aim for precise terms such as “car park,” “to the east of Hospital Road,” “bus station,” and “two roundabouts.” More accurate collocations would make the description clearer and more appropriately formal.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including the contrast in “The main building has the same location, while only the facilities has been added.” The response is generally understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. In that example, “facilities” requires a plural verb, and the passive construction should be “have been added.” Other issues include “between both the years” and “three on each other,” where the sentence patterns do not express the intended comparison clearly. Tense and agreement also need attention in “the hospital building situated” and “the transport facilities were modified, the original bus stops…,” which joins clauses without suitable punctuation or a connector. Check agreement, articles, and sentence boundaries while retaining your attempts at complex structures.
