IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The maps underneath illustrate access to a hospital located in a city in 2007 and 2010.
Overall, the maps show that while that while the hospital road was retained, there were developments in the city hospital in 2010 with the addition of bus station, public car park and a roundabout.
In the east part of the city hospital in the year 2007, there is a car park for staff and the public. Beside the car park leading up north to the city hospital is a hospital road. There is also a ring road whi
However, in the year 2010, on the east part, a public car park was built while a bus station in the south west part of the city hospital was constructed. Two roundabouts were also built which give access to the city road.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify the two years and mention several relevant changes, including the new bus station, public car park and roundabouts. However, the report only partially covers the maps: the 2007 description is cut off after “There is also a ring road whi”, and important changes such as the removal of the bus stops and the separation of staff and public parking are not explained. The overview also says there was “a roundabout,” although two were added, and the public car park’s position is not clearly distinguished from the existing staff car park. The response is 14 words below the required minimum, which limits the detail available. Develop a complete comparison of both layouts and accurately describe the main changes.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is a basic attempt to organise the response with an introduction, an overview and paragraphs beginning “In the east part…” and “However, in the year 2010…”. The contrast between the years is therefore apparent. However, progression is interrupted by the unfinished sentence “There is also a ring road whi”, and the 2007 paragraph does not lead to a complete account of that map. The overview repeats “while that while,” while “However” does not clearly connect the final paragraph to the preceding incomplete description. Use complete, clearly separated paragraphs and organise details by year or by feature, with accurate linking phrases such as “By 2010” and “In contrast.”
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant map vocabulary, including “access,” “car park,” “bus station,” “roundabouts” and “constructed,” so the reader can identify the main subject and some changes. There is also an attempt to vary wording with “addition” and “built.” However, several phrases are imprecise or repetitive: “in the east part” is used twice, and “developments in the city hospital” does not clearly describe changes to the surrounding road access. “Hospital road” and “city road” should be presented consistently as named features, and “give access to the city road” is vague about what the roundabouts connect. Choose precise location and change vocabulary, such as “to the east of Hospital Road” and “provided access between the roads.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response includes some controlled simple sentences, such as “Two roundabouts were also built,” and attempts a more complex overview using “while.” However, the range is limited, and errors recur in longer constructions. “While that while” is an obvious repetition, and “with the addition of bus station” is missing an article. In “Beside the car park leading up north to the city hospital is a hospital road,” the sentence structure makes the relationship between the road and car park difficult to follow. The unfinished “There is also a ring road whi” also leaves a sentence incomplete. Practise complete comparisons with clear subjects and verbs, and check articles, sentence boundaries and punctuation before finishing.
