IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Given two maps illustrate the change in road structure around city hospital between the years' 2007 and 2010 respectively.

It can be observed that the City Hospital is surrounded by a Ring Road and connected to City Road via an interminnent Hospital Road and spaces for Car park and Bus stops during both year time periods.

In the year 2007, Car park was common between staff and public and was located at the East of Hospital Road and South of City Hospital. Additonally, a total of 6 Bus Stops were located on both sides of Hospital Road 3 on each side.

However, in the year 2010 a major shift in the overall structure of the map is quite evident with Public and Staff car park being seperated, introduction of two roundabouts at both ends of Hospital Road and a Bus station built connecting both the roundabouts.

Precisely, Public car park located on the Eastern side of City Hospital connected via Rind Road, previous Car park for staff and public being reserved purely for staff and Bus station on the West of Hospital Road.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the main changes between the maps: the shared car park becomes separate staff and public facilities, the bus stops are replaced by a bus station, and two roundabouts are added. These are relevant features, and the 2007 description includes the car park’s position and the six stops. However, the overview is not fully accurate: the hospital is not surrounded by the Ring Road on all sides, and the road connection is described as “interminnent,” which obscures the layout. The 2010 account also says the bus station connects the roundabouts, whereas it is beside Hospital Road with access to both ends; the new public car park is east of the Ring Road, not simply east of the hospital. More precise spatial reporting would make the comparison clearer and more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable progression: an opening overview, a paragraph on 2007, and a final paragraph describing the 2010 changes. Contrast markers such as “However” and “Additionally” help signal relationships between details. At times, though, the organisation is compressed and connections between features are unclear. The final sentence lists the public car park, the former shared car park, and the bus station without clearly separating their locations or explaining how the access routes relate. The overview also combines several features in one sentence, making its main point difficult to follow. Use clearer topic sentences and group the road changes separately from the parking and bus changes; this would strengthen progression and make referencing more precise.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a reasonable range of task-related vocabulary, including “roundabouts,” “reserved purely for staff,” “located,” and “connected,” which helps convey the map changes. Some less suitable choices and spelling errors reduce precision, however. “Interminnent” appears to be an attempt at “intermittent,” but that word does not clearly describe the road; “connecting road” would be more natural. “Major shift in the overall structure” is broad for a set of specific changes, while “Rind Road” is a misspelling of “Ring Road.” There are also errors in “Additonally” and “seperated.” Aim for accurate map vocabulary and check spelling carefully, especially for repeated labels. More precise phrases such as “runs between” and “is accessed from” would improve clarity.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of sentence forms, including a complex opening with “Given two maps…” and a contrastive sentence beginning “However.” The main information is generally understandable, but some grammatical errors remain. The opening construction is incomplete or awkward: “Given two maps illustrate” should be “The two maps illustrate.” In “between the years’ 2007 and 2010,” the possessive form is incorrect, and “during both year time periods” has problems with number and phrasing. The final sentence is also a fragment-like list rather than a complete, clearly structured sentence. Use straightforward subject–verb sentences to report each location, then add complex clauses where they are controlled. This would preserve your range while improving accuracy and readability.
