Student answer (Band 5.5)

The provided maps represent road access to a city hospital from 2007 to 2010.

In 2007, city hospital accessed through a city road from a south side of the hospital. On both sides on hospital road, there were six bus stops and right side of these stops there was a parking area for both public and staff. City hospital was covered and accessed by a ring road.

However, In 2010 city hospital do some modifications in its certain exterior things like in the East side of the hospital there is separate public car park. Bus station now shifted entirely on the left side of hospital road and in the center of both roundabouts. Ob the right side of hospital road there is a car park for staff only which can be accessed thorough ring road.

Overall, City hospital contained its basic old style exterior in 2007 while in 2010, it undergoes to some modifications like separate car parking for both staff and public. While bus station entirely moved on left side of the hospital road and also included beautiful roundabouts.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the main changes between the maps: the shared car park becomes separate staff and public facilities, the bus stops are replaced by a bus station, and roundabouts are added. These are relevant features and give the response a clear comparison. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear. The public car park is east of the Ring Road, not simply east of the hospital, and the staff car park is east of Hospital Road; it is not described as being accessed through the Ring Road. The bus station is west of Hospital Road and connects to both roundabouts, rather than being “in the center” of them. The overview also calls the changes “beautiful,” which is subjective rather than a useful map summary. More precise locations and a clearer overview would strengthen the report.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure: it introduces the maps, describes 2007, contrasts this with 2010, and ends with an overview. This gives the reader an overall route through the information. The contrast marker “However” helps signal the change, and the main features are grouped by year. Some links and references are less clear, though. For example, “right side of these stops” makes the location of the car park difficult to follow, while “in the center of both roundabouts” does not clearly explain the bus station’s position. The final paragraph repeats several points from the 2010 description rather than synthesising the main changes. Use clearer spatial references and make the overview distinct from the detailed comparisons.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant map vocabulary, including “accessed,” “bus stops,” “parking area,” “separate,” and “roundabouts,” so the reader can understand the general subject and changes. There is also some attempt to vary wording, such as “modifications” and “shifted.” However, several choices are imprecise or unnatural for describing maps: “basic old style exterior” does not accurately describe the road layout, and “beautiful roundabouts” is subjective and unsuitable for an objective report. Phrases such as “do some modifications” and “car parking” are also less natural in this context. Aim for precise terms such as “layout,” “was converted into,” and “car park,” and use neutral language throughout.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response attempts both simple and more complex sentences, including the contrast beginning “However” and the final sentence linking several changes. Meaning is generally recoverable, but some grammatical errors recur and occasionally make relationships unclear. For example, “city hospital accessed through a city road” needs a passive verb form, while “city hospital do some modifications” has an incorrect verb form and tense. Articles and prepositions are also inconsistent in phrases such as “from a south side” and “on both sides on hospital road.” The sentence beginning “Overall” shifts between past and present forms (“contained” and “undergoes”), and the final “While” clause is not a complete sentence. Check tense consistency and build complete sentences with accurate articles and prepositions.
