IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The rendered maps depicts the information regarding how the road access to a city hospital had transformed from 2007 to 2010.

Looking from an overall perspective,it can be clearly seen that the road has undergone a drastic change while some amenities are added such as bus stand, public car park and staff car park.

Turning to the details, during 2007, the ring road and city hospital was situated into north direction which remained similar.Interestingly, the bus stand was located into east corner whereas it had replaced into west direction of map.

Switching to the remaining information, hospital road was witnessed into middle of map which had been re-developed by to curcular chonk. While, during 2010,public car park had been renovated into east direction as well as staff car park had been located into south- east corner of map.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You identify the period and mention several relevant features, including the hospital, Ring Road, car parks and changes to bus facilities. However, the account only partially reports the maps, and some details are inaccurate or unclear: the bus stops were replaced by a bus station, not a bus stand that simply moved from east to west; the public car park was newly added east of Ring Road, while the existing car park became staff-only. The overview also says amenities were added without clearly summarising the main changes, and the roundabouts are not accurately described. The response is 15 words below the required minimum, which further limits the detail you can include. Select the key changes and describe their locations precisely.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has an introduction, an overview and two detail paragraphs, so there is an attempt to organise the information. Phrases such as “Looking from an overall perspective” and “Turning to the details” signal the intended progression. However, the sequence of information is difficult to follow: the account shifts from the Ring Road to bus facilities, then to Hospital Road and car parks without a clear comparison between the two years. Some linking expressions, including “Switching to the remaining information,” feel mechanical, and “While” does not connect the final ideas effectively. Grouping changes by feature—road layout, bus access and parking—and comparing 2007 directly with 2010 would create clearer progression and cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You attempt a range of descriptive language, including “transformed,” “drastic change” and “re-developed,” and use some relevant map vocabulary such as “north direction” and “east corner.” However, several choices are inaccurate or unnatural for describing maps. “Bus stand” does not match the labelled bus station, “curcular chonk” is unclear, and “renovated” suggests refurbishment rather than the addition of a car park. Repetition of general terms such as “located” and “direction” also limits precision. Use standard location and change vocabulary, and check spelling and collocations so the reader can identify each feature and its movement or replacement without guessing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

There is an attempt to use complex structures, for example “while some amenities are added” and “whereas it had replaced into west direction,” but these constructions are often faulty. Subject–verb agreement is inconsistent in “The rendered maps depicts” and “the ring road and city hospital was situated.” Tense and passive forms are also confused: “had transformed” and “had been re-developed by to” do not clearly express the changes shown. Articles, prepositions and punctuation need more control, as in “into north direction” and the missing spaces after commas. These errors sometimes make relationships between features difficult to understand. Practise accurate past-tense comparisons and use shorter, controlled sentences before adding more complex clauses.
