Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0
The response recognises that the maps show changes to access to the hospital and attempts a comparison between 2007 and 2010. However, it describes the routes as directions to follow rather than summarising the main changes. The claim that in 2010 you turn right and find the hospital near the public car park is not a clear or accurate account of the map: the key changes include two roundabouts, a bus station replacing the roadside bus stops, and separate staff and public car parks. There is no clear overview of these features. The response is also substantially below the required 150 words, leaving most important information unreported. To improve, give an overview first, then describe the main changes and their locations accurately.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 3.5
There is a basic attempt to compare the two years, using “the first one” and “while the map made for the city hospital 2010.” This gives the reader a general sense that the response concerns two maps. However, nearly all the information is packed into one long sentence, and the sequence of directions (“go straight then right … take the direct road”) is difficult to follow. The contrast introduced by “while” is not completed with a clearly organised comparison. Use separate paragraphs or sentences for an overview and the changes in each year, and connect them with precise links such as “By contrast” or “In 2010.”
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The response uses a few relevant terms, including “road,” “car park,” and “round about,” so the topic is recognisable. However, the vocabulary is limited and often imprecise for describing maps. “Big difference” is vague, while “direct and simple road” and “take the direct road” do not identify the actual changes in the road layout. The phrase “city of hospital” is also an awkward choice, and “differene” is misspelled. A wider range of map vocabulary—such as “access route,” “roundabout,” “bus station,” “located to the west,” and “was replaced by”—would allow more accurate and concise reporting. Check spelling and use standard forms consistently.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response attempts to combine ideas using “while,” but most of the writing is one extended sentence with several clauses joined without clear punctuation. This makes the relationships between the directions and the two maps hard to understand. There are also problems with sentence structure and articles, for example “the first one made to access to the city of hospital” and “while the map made for the city hospital 2010 needs you start.” These constructions do not form clear, accurate descriptions. The repeated use of “you” also shifts into giving instructions rather than reporting map features. Practise writing short, complete comparative sentences, then add a few controlled complex sentences using accurate past-tense forms and punctuation.
