IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The two maps compared the access of road to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

Overall, certain modifications occured throughout that time, there was a single parking area for everyone along with the hospital road which lead to the city hospital. However, after three years, that parking area expanded into three separate section with additional roundabouts.

In 2007, on the east entrance of the city hospital there was a car parking area for staff and public, one side of that parking area was linked to the hospital road surrounded by several trees, and the south side was linked to the city road. Moreover there was a straight ring road on the back side of the hospital.

Whereas, in 2010. the old parking area was restricted for the staff and the public car area was located on a huge separate place on the east side of the city hospital which was also linked to the ring road on back side. Additionally, there was a bus station area, on the west side of the hospital road, the city road joined with first roundabout which opened to the hospital road and the second roundabout was just on the front side of the city hospital linked bus station, hospital road, staff parking area with the hospital from the city road.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You identify the main change over time: the shared car park became staff-only, a separate public car park was added, and bus stops were replaced by a bus station, with roundabouts introduced. This gives the response a relevant overview and covers both maps. Some details, however, are unclear or inaccurate: the 2010 roundabouts are at the Ring Road and City Road junctions, not one “on the front side” of the hospital, and the public car park is east of the Ring Road rather than simply east of the hospital. The claim that the parking area “expanded into three separate section” is also not a precise account of the changes. More exact descriptions of locations and connections would make the report more complete and precise.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure, with an overview followed by separate descriptions of 2007 and 2010. This helps the reader compare the two maps, and linking expressions such as “Moreover” and “Additionally” show an attempt to connect details. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes difficult to follow, especially in the long final sentence, which combines several roads, roundabouts, and facilities without clearly explaining their relationships. “Whereas” also begins a sentence without a clear contrasting clause. Use shorter sentences and organise each year’s features in a consistent order—for example, road layout, parking, then bus facilities. Clearer referencing would help readers understand which road or roundabout each detail refers to.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant map vocabulary, including “car parking area,” “ring road,” “bus station,” and “roundabout,” and you attempt to describe changes with phrases such as “restricted for the staff.” However, several word choices and collocations are imprecise or awkward, including “access of road,” “on the back side,” and “huge separate place.” “Expanded into three separate section” does not accurately express the distinct changes to the parking facilities. These choices sometimes make the spatial information harder to interpret. Aim for precise, conventional map language, such as “road access,” “to the north of,” and “a separate public car park.” Check spelling and word forms, including “occurred” and “sections,” to improve control.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including a time contrast between the maps and clauses describing connections. Some sentences communicate the main changes, but grammatical errors and punctuation problems sometimes make relationships unclear. For example, “Overall, certain modifications occured throughout that time, there was…” joins two independent clauses with only a comma, while “the city road joined with first roundabout” is missing an article and has an unclear grammatical relationship. There are also tense and agreement issues in “parking area expanded into three separate section.” Use past-tense forms consistently, check articles and plurals, and divide long sentences into shorter units. This would preserve your range while making the map descriptions easier to follow.
