IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The two provided plans display road access to a city hospital in a period of 3-year between 2007 and 2010.
Overall, there are several changes had added to the road city such as two roundabouts, one on the lower side of the hospital and the other one on the city road between the city hospital and the city road.
In 2007, people enterd to the hospital straight from the city road and there was a car park for both, staff and public, while in 2010, people had to cross two roundabouts in order to be able to enter the city hospital and the old car park had specialized for the staff of the hospital and another car park had constructed in the northeast of the hospital.
There were sex bus stops along the hospital road. By contrast, these bus stops had replaced by a bus station which was located on the left side of the hospital road, just between both roundabouts.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You identify the main changes between the maps: the shared car park becomes staff-only, a public car park is added, the bus stops are replaced by a station, and two roundabouts are introduced. This gives the response a clear overview and covers the key developments. Most locations are also reported accurately, including the bus station on the west side of Hospital Road and the new car park to the northeast. However, the description of access is imprecise: in 2007, Hospital Road connected City Road to the Ring Road, rather than providing direct entry from City Road into the hospital. The statement that people had to cross both roundabouts to enter the hospital is also an over-generalisation. Clarifying the road layout and describing the changes more precisely would strengthen an otherwise relevant account.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable progression: an introduction, an overview, and then details comparing 2007 with 2010. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “In 2007,” and “By contrast” help signal the stages of the comparison. However, the overview sentence is difficult to follow because it combines the roundabouts’ locations with an unclear description of the road layout. The final two details about parking and bus facilities are also crowded into one long sentence, while the bus-stop comparison is separated into a short final paragraph. Grouping the changes by feature—road access, parking, and public transport—and using clearer references to each map would make the organisation more coherent and cohesion less mechanical.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant task vocabulary, including “roundabouts,” “car park,” “bus stops,” and “bus station,” so the main features are understandable. There are also attempts at more precise language, such as “located” and “specialized.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural: “road city,” “there are several changes had added,” and “the old car park had specialized for the staff” do not express the intended meanings clearly. “Sex bus stops” is a spelling error that changes the word, and “entered to” is not the natural expression for access. Aim for accurate map-description phrases such as “road layout,” “was converted into,” and “six bus stops.” This would improve precision and control without requiring more elaborate vocabulary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt a range of sentence forms, including a comparison with “while” and a contrast introduced by “By contrast.” The overall meaning can usually be followed, but errors in verb forms and sentence construction are persistent. For example, “there are several changes had added” combines incompatible structures; “these bus stops had replaced” is missing the passive auxiliary “been”; and “another car park had constructed” also needs a passive form. The phrase “a period of 3-year” has an incorrect article and number pattern, while “people entered to the hospital” uses an incorrect preposition within the verb pattern. Practise forming past simple and past passive sentences consistently, and check articles and prepositions. More accurate control of these basic patterns would make your comparisons much clearer.
