IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The diagram illustrates the road changes in road access to city hospital in 2017 and 2010.
Overall, the road acess became more organized in 2010. The roundabouts more organized likely to improved traffic flow, and the separation of the car parks along with the establishment with the dedicated bus station enhanced the transportation both facilities public car park or staff car park.
In 2007, Hospital Road intersected with City Road, connecting City Hospital to Ring road,
with several bus stops along Hospital Road. On the east side of Hospital road, there was a combined staff and public park with its entrance facing north towards City Hospital. The hospital was surrounded by Ring Road.
By 2010, significant modifications occured. A roundabout was added at the junction of Hospital road and City Road, with another roundabout further noth where Hospital Road meets Ring Road. The original car park was converted into staff parking, while the car park was constructed on the wast side of the hospital with its entrance facing west towards the hospital. Additionally, a centralized bus station replaced the scattered bus stops on the west side of the Hospital Road.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You identify the main transformation: the bus stops were replaced by a bus station, the shared car park became staff-only, and roundabouts were added at both ends of Hospital Road. The overview also attempts to explain the overall effect of the changes. However, several details are inaccurate or unclear: the opening dates say 2017 and 2010, the new public car park was east of Ring Road rather than on the west side of the hospital, and the bus station was west of Hospital Road, not simply a replacement for stops on that side. The 2007 car-park entrance is also described as facing north, which is not established by the map. Accurate coverage of the key changes is strong, but these misreadings and some underdeveloped details limit fuller precision.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall structure: an overview is followed by separate descriptions of 2007 and 2010. This makes the chronological comparison easy to follow, and phrases such as “In 2007” and “By 2010” guide the reader effectively. However, the overview contains a confusing sentence—“the separation of the car parks along with the establishment with the dedicated bus station enhanced the transportation both facilities public car park or staff car park”—where the relationship between the ideas is difficult to understand. Some information is also repeated, such as the roundabouts being described in both the overview and the final paragraph, while the new public car park is not clearly integrated into the comparison. More precise linking and clearer reference to each location would improve progression.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant map vocabulary, including “intersected,” “junction,” “combined,” “converted,” and “centralized,” and these choices help describe changes and locations. However, spelling and word-choice errors are noticeable: “acess,” “occured,” “noth,” and “wast” reduce accuracy, while “road changes in road access” is repetitive. Some collocations are awkward, particularly “more organized likely to improved traffic flow” and “establishment with the dedicated bus station.” The phrase “car park was constructed on the wast side” also misidentifies the location, though the location error is primarily a task-accuracy issue. Aim for precise, natural map language and check spelling and collocations carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
There is a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the relative clause in “a roundabout was added at the junction … with another roundabout further north” and the contrast introduced by “while.” Most of the main changes remain understandable. However, some sentence structures are faulty, especially in the overview: “The roundabouts more organized likely to improved traffic flow” lacks a clear verb pattern, and “enhanced the transportation both facilities…” is incomplete and difficult to parse. There are also inconsistencies in article use and sentence construction, as in “the car park was constructed” when introducing the new public facility. Greater control of complete clauses and verb forms would make the response more accurate while preserving its range.
