IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.

Student answer (Band 4.5)

The map illustrate the differnce between the changes in the hospital over the years.

These maps shows the how much improvements took place in a hospital.

Trees along with the hospital road went invisible after three years.

The bus stop changed its place in next three years. In 2010 Bus stop came on the left side of hospital road. Car parking also devides into public and staff segments in coming years. That is favorable facility for staff and now parking aggregiates properly. Moreover It also does not create a mess.

An addition of roundabout in the right side of parking manage traffic conviniently.

Two round about also built in the hospital road so the ambulance never face difficulty in emergency.

But the building structure of hospital did not not change. Just ring road turn round changed its location.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You identify several genuine changes, including the removal of the individual bus stops, the division of parking into staff and public areas, and the addition of roundabouts. However, the response does not give a clear, accurate overview of the main changes, and some details are misread: the bus stops were replaced by a bus station west of Hospital Road, not moved to its left side, and the new public car park is east of Ring Road. The claim that trees disappeared is unsupported by the maps. The hospital itself remained in place, but the road layout was altered rather than the Ring Road simply changing location. The response is also 12 words below the required minimum, limiting the detail reported.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0

The response has separate paragraphs and uses basic linking expressions such as “Moreover” and “But,” so the reader can see that you are describing changes over time. However, the ideas do not progress in a clear map-based order, and the opening repeats the same general point about improvements. Some links are unclear: “The bus stop changed its place” does not explain the replacement bus station, while the comments about ambulance access and parking benefits interrupt the description of what is shown. Organise the response into an overview followed by a systematic comparison of the road, bus facilities and car parks. Use references such as “by 2010” and “in contrast” to make the comparisons clearer.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You attempt vocabulary relevant to the topic, including “car parking,” “roundabout,” “segments” and “building structure,” and the reader can generally identify the subject of each sentence. However, the range is limited and several word choices or spellings make the description imprecise, such as “parking aggregates properly,” “came on the left side” and “ring road turn round.” “Trees” is not supported by the map, and “bus stop” should be distinguished from the new “bus station.” Aim for precise map-description terms and accurate collocations rather than adding speculative benefits. Check spelling carefully, particularly in words such as “difference,” “divided” and “conveniently,” as these errors are noticeable.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

Most sentences use simple structures, and some basic meaning is conveyed, but errors in agreement, articles, tense and sentence construction are frequent. For example, “The map illustrate” and “These maps shows” have subject–verb agreement errors, while “the how much improvements” is an incorrectly formed noun phrase. “Car parking also devides into” does not use a suitable passive form for a change that occurred, and “the ambulance never face difficulty” has problems with number and verb agreement. There is also an accidental repetition in “did not not change.” Practise accurate past-tense passive forms, such as “was replaced,” and check each sentence for a clear subject and correctly matched verb.
