IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The two maps represent major structural changes that took place in the City hospital in three years span, from 2007 to 2010.
Overall the City hospital went through swift changes between these three years. A significant difference can be seen adjacent the hospital road, with the replacment of bus stops with roundabout and a bus station nearby. The car parking of staff and public were also seperated which were combined in the earlier layout of the City Hospital.
In the year 2007, the ring road around the city had two intersections with one opening in the car park and other leading to hospital road. This was changed in the year 2010 as the parking of staff and public was seperated. The ring road now had two intersections in each distinct car park, along with a roundabout that lead to bus station and the other round about.
The bus stops around the hospital road in the south of the hospital were removed as two roundabouts were built here, leading to a bigger bus station. Also the public car parking was hsifted in the east of City hospital leaving the earlier car park , only for the staff.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the main changes: the bus stops were replaced by a bus station, the car park was divided into staff and public facilities, and two roundabouts were added. The overview also usefully contrasts the earlier combined parking arrangement with the later separation. However, some details are unclear or inaccurate. In 2007, the Ring Road did not have “two intersections” leading respectively to the car park and Hospital Road; Hospital Road connected the Ring Road to City Road, while the car park entrance was on Hospital Road. The 2010 public car park was east of the Ring Road, not simply “in the east of City hospital.” The bus station’s position and access routes could also be described more precisely. These omissions and imprecisions leave some features less fully reported than others.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs describing the layouts. This makes the comparison between 2007 and 2010 easy to follow in broad terms. Time markers such as “In the year 2007” and “in the year 2010” help organise the account, and “Also” adds a further change. However, the progression within the detail paragraphs is sometimes difficult to track: the discussion moves between the Ring Road, car parks, bus stops and roundabouts without consistently grouping related features. Phrases such as “the other round about” have an unclear reference, and “here” does not specify the location. Grouping the changes by road access, parking and public transport, with clearer references, would make the cohesion more controlled.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a reasonable range of vocabulary for describing map changes, including “replaced,” “separated,” “removed,” “built” and “leading to.” These choices communicate the main developments, and terms such as “car park” and “roundabout” are appropriate to the task. Some word choices and collocations are imprecise, however: “swift changes” is not a natural description of changes shown across two maps, while “the parking of staff and public” is less clear than “the car park for staff and the public.” There are also spelling errors, including “replacment,” “seperated” and “hsifted.” More precise location language, such as “to the east of the Ring Road” and “on the western side of Hospital Road,” would improve clarity and range.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including the overview sentence beginning “A significant difference can be seen” and the clause “which were combined in the earlier layout.” Most of the intended meaning remains understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “in three years span” needs an article and a more suitable preposition, and “between these three years” is not a well-formed time expression. In “the car parking of staff and public were also seperated,” the subject does not agree with the verb; “car parks” would take “were,” while “parking” would take “was.” The sentence about the Ring Road and its “two intersections” is also structurally awkward. Check articles, agreement and sentence boundaries, while retaining your attempts at complex forms.
