IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The given images show the major differences that took place since 2007 to 2010 regarding the development of road access to a city hospital. There are alot of new additions in the map if we compare the two years side by side. As for the first major thing nwould like to mention the huge bus stop on the left hand of main hospital road that was previously present so far away from the main hospital road and would have made it difficult for the visitors to travel convieniently. they also switched the combined car parking for staff and public to only staff and made another huge place for public car parking seprately on the right hand of the main hospital building. Construction of three roundabouts since 2007 can also be seen which indicates that there must be a greater influx of traffic hence the need of better routes for all kind of traffic. Bus station also has two passages and each of them connects to a roundabout for a cleaner transport routes.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify several important changes, including the conversion of the shared car park into a staff car park, the addition of a separate public car park, and the replacement of bus stops with a bus station. However, the account is only partly accurate and does not give a clear, neutral overview of the main changes. In 2007 there were six bus stops, three on each side of Hospital Road; they were not a single stop “on the left” or “so far away” from the road. The maps show two roundabouts in 2010, not three, and the public car park is east of Ring Road rather than east of the hospital building. The claim that traffic increased is speculation, not information shown by the maps. Describe locations and changes precisely, without inferring causes.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response follows a broadly chronological comparison and uses linking expressions such as “As for” and “also,” so the reader can identify the main topic. However, it is presented as one long paragraph, with no distinct overview and little clear progression from the overall changes to specific details. Several ideas are crowded into long sentences, particularly the sentence beginning “As for the first major thing,” which moves from bus stops to parking without clear separation. The final points about roundabouts and bus-station access are also joined together rather than organised as separate map features. Use a short introduction and overview, followed by a paragraph comparing transport access and another covering parking; make references between years explicit.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You attempt a range of relevant terms, including “road access,” “combined car parking,” “roundabouts,” and “passages,” and the general subject is understandable. However, several choices are imprecise or informal for describing maps. “Huge bus stop” misidentifies the new feature, which is a bus station, while “passages” is not the clearest term for the connecting roads. Phrases such as “main hospital building” and “cleaner transport routes” are vague, and “influx of traffic” introduces an unsupported interpretation. There are also noticeable spelling errors, including “alot,” “convieniently,” and “seprately.” Prefer exact map labels and location language, such as “bus station,” “access road,” and “east of Hospital Road,” and check spelling carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt some longer sentence forms, including a relative clause in “which indicates that there must be a greater influx of traffic,” and the main changes can generally be followed. However, control is uneven, especially in the long sentence beginning “As for the first major thing,” where the structure becomes difficult to track. The opening phrase “since 2007 to 2010” uses an incorrect time construction; write “between 2007 and 2010.” The sentence “As for the first major thing nwould like to mention” is also incomplete or malformed, and punctuation is missing where ideas should be separated. Build more controlled sentences, check verb and clause structure, and use full stops to prevent several map details from running together.
