IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The maps mentions the road access changes to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010. Overall, there is a major change in parking sites in both years, and in 2007 the bus stop had a seperate route, whilst in 2010 it was incorporated in the city hospital route.
In 2007, the ring road to the city hospital straight leads to both parking sites for buses and cars which was situated east to the Hospital road. This parking site was for buses and cars and dedicated for both staff and public.
In 2010, the road changed from straight to two roundabouts, from the ring road that leads to city hospital, small section was dedicated for common people parking, while the staff parking was seperated and can be found travelling through after one roundabout, and it was situated east to the hospital road. However, the bus station was seperated and had a different route that was adjusted between two roundabouts, present west to the hospital road.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the main changes: the shared car park becomes separate staff and public parking, the bus stops are replaced by a bus station, and roundabouts are added. The overview also signals that the layout changed between the two years. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear: in 2007 the car park was for staff and the public, not for buses and cars, and the bus stops were positioned on both sides of Hospital Road rather than having a separate route. The 2010 bus station is west of Hospital Road and connects to the road at both ends; describing it as having a “different route” does not explain this clearly. Report the key locations and access changes more precisely to make the comparison complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable structure, moving from an introduction and overview to separate descriptions of 2007 and 2010. This gives the reader a basic chronological progression, and linking words such as “Overall,” “In 2007,” and “However” help signal shifts. However, some connections between ideas are difficult to follow, particularly the long 2010 sentence beginning “from the ring road that leads to city hospital.” The repeated references to parking and the unclear phrase “incorporated in the city hospital route” also weaken cohesion. Use shorter, more clearly organised sentences and refer consistently to Hospital Road, Ring Road, and the car parks so that each change is easy to track.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant map vocabulary, including “roundabouts,” “parking,” “bus station,” and “east” and “west,” which allows you to describe the main features. There are also attempts at more specific language, such as “dedicated” and “seperated.” However, several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or imprecise: “parking sites for buses and cars” misidentifies the 2007 car park, while “common people parking” is not a natural way to describe public parking. “Straight leads” and “adjusted between two roundabouts” also make the layout harder to understand. Improve precision by using the map’s labels and standard phrases such as “public car park,” “located to the east of,” and “connected to.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and more complex sentences, including clauses introduced by “whilst” and “while,” and the overall meaning is generally recoverable. Some grammatical errors remain, however. For example, “The maps mentions” has subject–verb disagreement, and “the ring road … straight leads” has an unclear sentence structure. In “the staff parking was seperated and can be found,” the verb forms do not maintain consistent tense. Articles and prepositions are also sometimes missing or awkward, as in “east to the Hospital road.” Aim for complete, clearly structured sentences, keep past-tense descriptions consistent, and check agreement and article use when revising.
