Student answer (Band 5.5)

Two maps showing the changes of city hospital in 2007 and 2010.In 2007,city hospital has a rectangular shape having a ring road as a perimeter. The hospital road is in the south of hospital which is joined with the city road. There is also a car parking for the staff and public in the south east.It contains the same entrance and exit point through ring road.

The map of city hospital 2010 shows the same ring road around the city hospital having several changings.A public car park is shown in the east of hospital. There is also a roundabout in the south that joins the ring road with hospital road. However, there is also a further roundabout on the same hospital road in the south that lead us towards the city road.A staff car parking can be seen in the east of these roundabouts and the south east of hospital. We can also see a bus station across the hospital road opposite to staff parking.A simple roundabout can be seen in the east havinn no joined roads.

The changes between both maps includes parkings, roads and bus station. There is no particular change in hospital and the ring road excep a roundabout.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You identify several relevant changes, including the new bus station, the separation of staff and public parking, and the addition of roundabouts. However, the account only partially reports the maps’ main features, and some locations are inaccurate or unclear. In 2007, the shared car park is east of Hospital Road, not in the south-east, and it connects to Hospital Road rather than having an entrance and exit through Ring Road. In 2010, the roundabouts are at the Ring Road and City Road junctions; describing one as being “in the south” and another also “in the south” obscures this key change. The overview that the hospital and Ring Road remain unchanged is useful, but should be paired with a clearer summary of the major access and transport changes.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a generally understandable sequence: it describes the 2007 map, moves to 2010, and ends with a comparison. This gives the reader a basic overall structure. Linking expressions such as “However” and “There is also” help connect some details, although repeated use of “There is” makes the description feel list-like. Some references are difficult to follow, especially “A simple roundabout can be seen in the east having no joined roads,” and the two roundabouts are not distinguished clearly. The final comparison repeats earlier points rather than drawing them together. To improve progression, group the changes by feature—road layout, parking, and bus facilities—and use precise references such as “the northern roundabout” and “the southern roundabout.”

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant map vocabulary, including “ring road,” “roundabout,” “car park,” and “bus station,” so the topic is generally clear. There is some attempt to vary wording with phrases such as “perimeter” and “joins.” However, several choices are inaccurate or unnatural, including “changes of city hospital,” “car parking,” and “several changings.” “A simple roundabout” is also unclear as a description of the road layout. Spelling errors such as “havinn” and “excep” further reduce accuracy. Aim for standard map-description collocations and precise location language; this will make your account easier to understand without requiring more elaborate vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and longer sentence forms, for example, “There is also a roundabout in the south that joins…” and “A staff car parking can be seen…”. However, control is inconsistent, and errors sometimes make relationships between features difficult to understand. The opening is a sentence fragment, while “In 2007,city hospital has…” has faulty punctuation and tense: the maps describe past arrangements, so use the past simple. Articles and agreement also need attention in phrases such as “a car parking” and “the changes … includes.” Several sentences run together without spaces after full stops, and the final sentence is not clearly punctuated. Practise complete sentences, consistent past-tense reporting, and accurate subject–verb agreement.
