IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The maps illustrate road link to the city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

Looking at the details, in 2007, there was simple layout of road access to a city hospital. The hospital road connected to the main city road. Meabwhile, hospital road connected to the hospital's ring road. There were six bus stops on the east and west side of the hospital road. Moreover, eastern side of the hospital road had facility of car parking for publing and staff.

In contrast, In 2010, there were siginficant changes in road linking to the city hospital. The connecting point of the main raod and hospital road converted into roandabout. Furthermore, there was an addition a bus station and all bus stops were removed. There was another raoundabout which connected the hospital road to ring road. The new public car park added the eastern side of the city hospital and pervious car parking was designated only for staff.

Overall, there were significant changes in 2007 layout and in 2010. There were some essential additions such as bus station and new public car park. Meanwhile, there were two roadabout added for reducing traffic congestion.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You cover the main changes and provide a clear overview: the bus stops were replaced by a bus station, parking was divided into public and staff facilities, and two roundabouts were added. Most details match the maps, including the six original stops and the change in the existing car park’s use. However, the description of the new public car park as being “on the eastern side of the city hospital” is imprecise: it is east of Ring Road, with access from that road. The claim that the roundabouts were added “for reducing traffic congestion” also gives a purpose not shown by the maps. Keep the overview focused on visible changes and describe locations precisely to strengthen an otherwise well-covered response.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph on 2007, a comparison with 2010, and a concluding overview. The contrast marker “In contrast” helps signal the shift between maps, and the main changes are presented in a generally understandable order. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent organisation and shows some movement towards more flexible progression. However, linking words such as “Moreover” and “Furthermore” sometimes make the account feel like a list, while the final paragraph repeats changes already stated rather than adding a concise synthesis. Improve the flow by grouping related changes—for example, road layout, bus facilities, and parking—and use references such as “the existing car park” to connect ideas clearly.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant task vocabulary, including “bus stops,” “bus station,” “public car park,” “designated,” and “roundabout,” so the reader can identify the main features. However, the range is limited and several noticeable spelling and word-choice errors reduce precision: “Meabwhile,” “siginficant,” “roandabout,” and “pervious” appear in place of intended forms. Phrases such as “road link” and “facility of car parking” are also unnatural, and “essential additions” is less precise than a direct description of the changes. Build a reliable set of map-description collocations and check spelling carefully; this will make the account clearer and more natural without requiring unusually advanced vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more developed sentence forms, including “The hospital road connected to the main city road” and a sentence linking the removal of stops with the addition of a station. However, control is inconsistent, and errors occur in basic sentence construction as well as in longer attempts. Examples include “there was an addition a bus station,” which needs a different article and structure, and “The new public car park added the eastern side,” where the passive form and preposition are missing. There are also inconsistent capital letters after sentence boundaries, as in “In contrast, In 2010.” Practise accurate past-tense descriptions and passive forms such as “was added” and “was converted,” then proofread articles, prepositions, and punctuation.
