IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

These two maps illustrate the layout of city hospital in 2007 and the changes took place by 2010.

Overall, the hospital underwent significant infrastructural development during this three year period. The most notable changes include the expansion of parking facilities, the introduction of roundabouts to manage traffic flow around the area.

Looking at maps in details, the main hospital building enclosed by the ring road remained in the same central loaction. However, the surrounding access and amenities changed considerably . In 2007, there was a single road no roundabout are made and although, there was only parking fot both staff and public.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You identify the period and give an overview, noting infrastructural development and the addition of roundabouts. You also correctly state that the hospital remained in the same central location and that the 2007 car park served both staff and the public. However, the response addresses the maps only partially: it stops before describing the key 2010 changes, including the bus station replacing the individual stops, the separation of staff and public parking, and the new public car park beside Ring Road. The claim that there was “a single road” is also unclear and does not convey the access layout accurately. The response is 48 words below the required minimum, leaving too little detail to select and compare the main features. Develop the overview and report the major changes in both years.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview beginning with “Overall,” and a paragraph intended to describe the maps. This gives the reader a basic sense of the purpose and sequence. However, the final paragraph ends abruptly after the 2007 parking arrangement, so there is no progression through the 2010 map or a complete comparison. Some linking is also awkward: “However” does not clearly introduce a contrast, and “In 2007” is followed by a sentence whose ideas are difficult to connect. To improve, organise the details into a clear sequence—for example, unchanged hospital and road layout first, then the transport and parking changes—and use linking phrases to show comparisons precisely.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some relevant vocabulary for describing maps, including “layout,” “infrastructural development,” “parking facilities,” and “traffic flow.” These choices show an attempt to use language suited to the task rather than relying only on basic terms. However, several word-choice and spelling problems reduce precision, such as “loaction” and “fot,” while “a single road” does not clearly describe the road arrangement. “Changes took place” is understandable but less natural in this context, and “maps in details” is an inaccurate phrase. Aim for precise map vocabulary and check spelling and collocations. Terms such as “access road,” “bus station,” “designated staff parking,” and “separate public parking” would help you report the visible changes clearly.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including the overview sentence with “The most notable changes include…” and a contrast introduced by “However.” Nevertheless, errors are frequent, and the final sentence is particularly difficult to follow: “there was a single road no roundabout are made and although…” combines clauses without a clear grammatical structure. There are also problems with articles and sentence construction in “Looking at maps in details,” and the phrase “the changes took place by 2010” is not formed naturally. Use shorter, complete sentences when describing each feature, and check that each clause has a clear subject and verb. For example, state separately that the hospital remained in place and that roundabouts were added by 2010.
