IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The maps illustrate the layout of a road that is accessed to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

Overall, redevelopments near the city hospital is carried out in 2010, such as the construction of two roundabouts to control the traffic. Public car park is relocated, while a bus station is created instead of the separate bus stops.

In 2007, the city hospital was in the center of ring road and hospital road. There were various bus stops on the hospital road. There was a car park situated near the bus stop in the east side for both staff and public. There was a city road connected with hospital road in the south-east direction.

The area near the city hospital had gotten refurbished in 2010. Ring road and city hospital stayed at the same venue. However, car park was separated, transferring public car park to the east side of city hospital. A bus station was added in the western region of hospital road. The major redevelopment was the construction of two roundabouts on the hospital road, first connecting the city hospital and the second connecting the city road.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You identify the main changes and provide a clear overview: the roundabouts were added, the bus stops were replaced by a bus station, and parking was separated for staff and the public. You also correctly note that the hospital and Ring Road remained in place. This covers the task well, with some detail less fully reported: for example, the new public car park is specifically on the east side of Ring Road and has direct access from it, while the staff car park remains east of Hospital Road. Some location descriptions are unclear or inaccurate, such as saying the hospital was “in the center of ring road and hospital road” and placing the second roundabout as “connecting the city road” without explaining that it is at the Hospital Road–City Road junction. More precise comparisons would strengthen the account.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure, with an overview followed by separate descriptions of 2007 and 2010. This helps the reader follow the broad chronological comparison, and linking words such as “Overall,” “However,” and “while” signal relationships between ideas. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes unclear: the 2007 paragraph moves from the hospital’s position to bus stops, parking, and roads without consistently explaining how these features relate spatially. The final paragraph also repeats the general idea of redevelopment before listing changes. Some references, including “the first” and “the second,” require the reader to infer which roundabout is meant. Grouping changes by feature—roads, transport, and parking—and using clearer location references would make the organisation more coherent.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a suitable range of vocabulary for describing map changes, including “construction,” “relocated,” “separated,” and “redevelopment.” These choices communicate the main developments, and the response generally remains understandable. Some word choices and collocations are imprecise, however: “a road that is accessed to a city hospital” does not naturally describe the maps, and “stayed at the same venue” is not the usual way to say that a feature remained in the same location. “Various bus stops” is also vague when their arrangement can be described more precisely. There is some repetition of “city hospital,” “road,” and “car park.” Aim for accurate map-description phrases such as “road access to the hospital,” “remained in the same location,” and “bus stops on either side of Hospital Road.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple sentences and more complex forms, including the contrast in “Ring road and city hospital stayed at the same venue. However…” and the overview sentence using “while.” Meaning is usually recoverable, but some grammatical errors remain. In “redevelopments near the city hospital is carried out,” the plural subject does not agree with “is,” and the passive construction is awkward; “redevelopment was carried out” would be more controlled. Articles are also missing in “Public car park was relocated” and “car park was separated.” The phrase “There was a city road connected with hospital road” has an unclear grammatical relationship, while “first connecting … and the second connecting …” is not a complete, clearly structured description. Check agreement, articles, and sentence construction when describing locations.
