IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The given two maps demonstrates an access of road to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

Overall, we can see two maps displaying the change in infrastructure of city hospital between 2007 and 2010. The major change was a separation of public car park from staff car park which was first located on the right side of hospital road and then moved to the eastern side of city hospital. Moreover, two roundabout were built in the middle of ring road and city road and a new bus station on the left side of hospital road.

In 2007, there was a single car park area for both staff and public. Along with them, there were bus stops on the hospital road which were used by both the public and the staff. In addition, in the southern side of map, there was a city road.

In 2010, the joint car park area was used for the staff only parking and the public car parking was shifted to the eastern side of city hospital. In addition, a new bus station was built on the western side of hospital road. Two roundabouts were built in the middle of ring road and city road that connected bus station along with hospital road.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You cover the main changes and provide an overview, especially the separation of the staff and public parking and the addition of a bus station and two roundabouts. Most details are accurate: the former shared car park becomes staff-only, while a public car park is added east of the Ring Road. However, the overview says the public car park was “moved,” which suggests the original facility was relocated rather than a new one being added. The roundabouts are at the Ring Road and City Road junctions with Hospital Road, not “in the middle” of those roads. You also mention the bus stops but do not clearly state that they were removed. The main features are selected well, but these points need more precise reporting.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, an overview, and separate paragraphs for 2007 and 2010. This makes the comparison easy to follow, and time markers such as “In 2007” and “In 2010” help orient the reader. However, some linking is mechanical, particularly the repeated use of “In addition,” and “Moreover.” The overview also combines several changes in one long sentence, making the relationships between them less clear. The reference in “Along with them” is ambiguous, and “that connected bus station along with hospital road” does not clearly explain what the roundabouts connect. Use more precise referencing and vary the way you link related changes to make the progression smoother.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for describing maps, including “infrastructure,” “separation,” “eastern side,” and “western side,” and the reader can generally understand the changes. However, several word choices and collocations are unnatural or imprecise, such as “an access of road,” “joint car park area,” and “public car parking was shifted.” “Two roundabout” also has an incorrect plural form, while “in the middle” is not a precise description of the junction locations. These issues limit the accuracy and flexibility of the vocabulary, even though they do not prevent understanding. Aim for standard map-description phrases such as “road access,” “shared car park,” and “was replaced by” or “a separate facility was added,” depending on the change shown.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and more complex sentences, including clauses beginning with “which” and “that,” and the overall meaning is usually clear. Some grammatical errors remain, however. The opening has subject–verb disagreement in “maps demonstrates,” and “a separation” is not formed naturally in that sentence. There are also article and number errors in “two roundabout,” and the phrase “on the southern side of map” is missing an article. In the final sentence, the clause beginning “that connected” has an unclear grammatical relationship to the roundabouts and bus station. Review agreement, articles, plurals, and clause construction; clearer sentence patterns would help you express the map changes more accurately.
