IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The layout provide the information about the developmental changes occurred in a city hospital. Overall, it is apparent that car park for public and staff was same in 2007 and there were six bus stops on the side of road while after the renovation the parking for public vehicles was placed on the east side of hospital building and two roundabout had been built to avoid the traffic congestion in 2010.

In 2007 the city hospital building was surrounded by ring road and there was intersection from the city road toward hospital and car park for staff and public was same in the east of hospital road. In addition, the were six bus stops on hospital road.

After the redevelopment, the public car park was built in the east side of hospital building and two rondabouts were built one on the junction of city road and other in the south side of hospital building to improve the flow of traffic . Furthermore, the bus station had been constructed on the west side of hospital road.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the main changes: the shared car park becomes separate public and staff parking, the bus stops are replaced by a bus station, and two roundabouts are added. The overview also recognises that the layout was redeveloped. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear. The public car park is on the east side of Ring Road, not the east side of the hospital building, and the roundabouts are at the Ring Road and City Road junctions with Hospital Road; describing one as being “in the south side of hospital building” misplaces it. You also omit that the bus station is west of Hospital Road and connects to both ends of it. More precise location reporting and fuller coverage of these connections would strengthen the response.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure, moving from an overview of the changes to a description of the 2007 and 2010 layouts. Paragraphing helps distinguish the original arrangement from the redevelopment, and linking phrases such as “Overall,” “In addition,” and “Furthermore” make the sequence easy to follow. However, the overview repeats details that are then given again, and the final paragraph does not clearly organise the 2010 features by location or explain how they relate to one another. Some connections are also unclear, as in “there was intersection from the city road toward hospital.” Grouping features systematically—for example, road changes, parking, then bus facilities—would create smoother progression and reduce repetition.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “surrounded,” “redevelopment,” “junction,” “bus station,” and “traffic congestion.” These terms help communicate the broad changes, and the meaning is generally understandable. Some word choices and collocations are imprecise, however: “developmental changes occurred” is awkward for describing a map, “parking for public vehicles” is less natural than “public car park,” and “avoid the traffic congestion” claims a purpose not shown by the maps. There are also spelling errors in “rondabouts” and an inconsistent form in “car park” references. Use conventional map language such as “was converted into,” “was located,” and “was replaced by,” while keeping descriptions factual rather than inferring reasons.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a contrast between 2007 and 2010 and clauses introduced by “while” and “after.” The main information remains understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “The layout provide” needs subject–verb agreement, while “the were six bus stops” has an incorrect subject construction. In “two roundabout had been built,” the plural noun and verb form should agree, and “car park for staff and public was same” needs an article and a clearer grammatical structure. Tense choices also shift between past simple and past perfect without a clear reason. Check agreement, articles, and consistent past-tense descriptions, and proofread sentence boundaries and spacing around punctuation.
