IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The two maps illustrate the road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

Overall, the hospital remained in the same location but the surrounding area changed. The most noticeable developments were the construction of a bus station, the addition of two roundabouts, and the seperation of staff and public parking area.

In 2007, it can be seen clearly that city hospital was surrounded by ring road. Hospital road connected to city road in the south. There were six bus stops along Hospital road, three on each side. In addition, a car park for both staff and the public was loacated to the east side.

In 2010, several major improvements had been made to the road system. Two roundabouts had been constructed on Hospital road and the other at its junction with city road. The original bus stop had been replaced by a bus station to the west side of Hospital road. Furthermore the shared car park divided into the two separate parts. the staff car park was located to the east side of Hospital road and public car park was built to the east side of City Hospital. The Ring Road and City Road are on the same position.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response identifies the main overall changes: the hospital stays in place, a bus station is added, parking is separated, and roundabouts are introduced. It also gives relevant comparisons between 2007 and 2010, including the six bus stops and the shared car park in the earlier map. This covers the task well, though some details are less fully or accurately expressed. In particular, the 2010 map has roundabouts at both the Ring Road and City Road junctions; “the other at its junction” is unclear after saying two were on Hospital Road. The public car park is east of Ring Road, not simply east of the hospital. More precise descriptions of these locations and the bus station’s access would make the account more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear four-part structure: introduction, overview, and separate descriptions of each year. The progression from the earlier layout to the later changes is easy to follow, and linking phrases such as “Overall,” “In addition,” and “Furthermore” help signal relationships. However, some connections are mechanical or unclear. “Two roundabouts had been constructed on Hospital road and the other at its junction with city road” makes the locations difficult to interpret, while “The Ring Road and City Road are on the same position” feels disconnected from the preceding point. Improve cohesion by grouping related changes together and using clear references, for example, specifying each roundabout’s junction and linking the parking changes directly to the former shared car park.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The response uses relevant map vocabulary, including “surrounded,” “connected,” “junction,” “bus station,” and “separate parts,” so the main information is generally understandable. There is some useful variation in describing changes, such as “construction,” “addition,” and “replaced.” However, word choice and spelling are not consistently controlled: “seperation” and “loacated” are misspelled, and “improvements” is evaluative rather than neutral for an objective map description. Phrases such as “the original bus stop” are imprecise because the map shows multiple individual bus stops. Aim for accurate, neutral terms such as “facilities,” “designated,” and “individual bus stops,” and check spelling and collocations before submitting.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

There is a mix of simple and more developed sentence forms, including the overview sentence beginning “The most noticeable developments were…” and the contrast between the two years. Most meaning remains clear, but some grammatical errors and punctuation issues are present. For example, “the shared car park divided into the two separate parts” needs a passive verb (“was divided”), and “the staff car park…” begins a new sentence without a capital letter. The phrase “Two roundabouts had been constructed on Hospital road and the other…” also has an unclear structure, while “The Ring Road and City Road are on the same position” uses an awkward prepositional pattern. Review passive constructions, sentence boundaries, and article/preposition use to improve accuracy.
