IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The diagram shows the difference between two maps,in relation with, how easy it is to access the City Hospital in 2007 and 2010.

The 2007 map illustrates the simplicity of accessing the city hospital via north of city road. It also shows the spacious parking lot, west and east side, of the Hospital Road where car park for public and staff is merged, rather than keeping it seperate. The bus station is at the way far east of the City Hospital making it unreliable in case of emergencies.

In the 2010 map, it shows the easiness of accessing the City Hospital via the roundabout at city road directly connecting it to the Hospital Road as well as the Bus Station. It also shows how the staff car park and the public car park has been seperated providing reliability to both the public and the staff of the hospital. The Bus Station has been moved west, south of the hospital, making it easier for accessing the hospital.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the two years and mention several relevant changes, including the separation of the staff and public car parks, the addition of roundabouts, and the replacement of bus stops by a bus station. However, the account is not consistently accurate: in 2007 the shared car park is east of Hospital Road, not on both its west and east sides, and the bus stops are beside Hospital Road rather than a bus station far to the east. The 2010 bus station is west of Hospital Road, but describing it as “west, south” is unclear. The response also focuses on claims about ease and reliability instead of giving a clear overview of the main physical changes. More precise locations and a concise overview would strengthen coverage.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear basic sequence: it describes 2007 first and then moves to 2010, so the reader can follow the year-by-year comparison. Linking phrases such as “In the 2010 map” help signal this shift. However, there is no distinct overview, and several details are bundled into long sentences, making the progression less clear. For example, the 2007 sentence combines access, parking and bus-stop information, while the final sentence gives two directions for the bus station without explaining its position clearly. Organising the response into an introduction, overview and two focused detail sections, and using clearer references between features, would make cohesion less mechanical and improve the flow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some relevant topic vocabulary, including “roundabout,” “Hospital Road,” “car park,” and “separated,” and the reader can generally understand the intended comparisons. However, several choices are imprecise or unnatural for describing maps. “The easiness of accessing” and “making it unreliable in case of emergencies” express evaluation rather than the locations and changes shown. “Bus station” is also used for the 2007 features, which are individual bus stops, and “west, south” does not clearly describe a direction. Spelling errors such as “seperate” and “seperated” further reduce accuracy. Aim for precise map language, such as “was located,” “was replaced by,” and “to the west of,” and check spelling.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mixture of simple and more extended sentence forms, and the overall meaning is usually recoverable. Some grammatical and punctuation errors remain, however. The opening has awkward punctuation and structure in “two maps,in relation with, how easy it is,” while “the staff car park and the public car park has been seperated” has a plural subject that requires “have been separated.” The phrase “via north of city road” is missing articles and has an unclear prepositional pattern; “via the north of City Road” would still not express the map location as naturally as “from City Road.” Commas are also often attached to the preceding word. Use shorter, controlled sentences and check agreement, articles and punctuation.
