IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The two maps illustrate the changes in road access to a city hospital between 2007 and 2010.
Overall, the infrastructure of the road underwent significant changes, while several features remained unchanged. Meanwhile, some new facilities were introduced into the location. However, some areas were expanded.
To begin with, in 2007, a ring road surrounded the city hospital and a hospital road was adjacent to the main city road. Moreover, a bus stop was located to the east direction of the hospital and a car park for both staff and public was situated to the south east side of the hospital.
On the other hand, in 2010, several new facilities were added to the city hospital location such as three roundabouts were introduced, two of them were built at the both ends of the hospital road, while the third one was constructed to south east direction of the hospital. In addition, a separate public car park was built to the east side of the hospital and a bus station was introduced to the west side of the hospital road.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the maps’ overall purpose and note that the site changed, but the overview is too general to highlight the main developments clearly. The description of 2007 includes a misplaced bus stop: the map shows several stops on both sides of Hospital Road, not just one to the east of the hospital. In 2010, there are two roundabouts, not three; they are at the Ring Road and City Road junctions, rather than one being southeast of the hospital. You also omit key comparisons, including the removal of the individual bus stops, the conversion of the existing car park to staff use, and the new public car park’s access from Ring Road. Select and accurately explain these changes to make the account more complete and developed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear basic structure: an introduction, an overview, and separate descriptions of the two years. Time markers such as “in 2007” and “in 2010” help the reader follow the comparison, and the ideas are generally presented in a sensible order. However, the overview is vague, and the body paragraphs do not consistently compare corresponding features across the maps. “On the other hand” suggests a contrast, but the following paragraph mainly lists additions rather than explaining what changed from the earlier layout. Some linking phrases, including “Moreover” and “In addition,” make the progression feel list-like. Grouping the changes by feature—bus access, parking, and road junctions—would create a clearer comparative progression.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for describing maps, including “surrounded,” “separate,” “introduced,” and “constructed.” These choices make the general subject clear, and there is some variation rather than repeated reliance on very basic words. However, several expressions are imprecise or awkward for map description: “the infrastructure of the road,” “to the east direction,” and “to the south east side” do not sound natural. “Facilities” is also too broad when referring to specific transport and parking features. Aim for precise location and change vocabulary, such as “on the eastern side,” “at the junction,” “was converted into,” and “was removed.” This would improve accuracy and collocation while retaining your current range.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “a car park for both staff and public was situated…” and a longer sentence describing the roundabouts. Most sentences remain understandable, and the past tense is generally appropriate for the maps. Some grammatical errors and awkward constructions persist, however. In “three roundabouts were introduced, two of them were built,” the clauses are joined incorrectly; use a semicolon or a conjunction such as “and.” The phrase “at the both ends” has an unnecessary article, and “a car park for both staff and public” needs a more complete parallel construction. Check articles, clause boundaries, and prepositions when revising complex sentences.
