IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The map diagrams show the access route to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

Overall, it can be seen that, the new adjustments have been done on road in 2010 with new developmentsfrom separate public paking to bus stop near the hospital.

The hospital is located in between the main road and city road in both years. In 2007 the bus stop was located in the north east, however, in 2010 it relocated near the hospital along with two road junctions which connects the hospital road and city road. Additionally, in the past, there was a joint car park for both public and staff, in 2010 it designed as only for staff parking and public parking was constructed next to east of hospital.

In 2007, there was only one side of the road which connects hospital road to city road, in 2010 the devolpment of road made two roundabout which links bus station and city road and hopital road as well.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the main changes: the shared car park became staff-only, a separate public car park was added, and the bus stops were replaced by a bus station. You also note the two roundabouts, so the response covers the key developments and gives an overall comparison. Some details are unclear or inaccurate, however. The 2007 bus stops were along Hospital Road, not simply “in the north east,” and the 2010 bus station is west of Hospital Road rather than “near the hospital” in a precise sense. The overview’s phrase “new developments from separate public parking to bus stop” is also difficult to interpret. To strengthen the report, describe the locations and access changes more precisely and make the overview clearly summarise the major transformation.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and paragraphs describing the changes. Sequencing by year and the use of “Overall,” “In 2007,” and “Additionally” help the reader follow the comparison. However, progression is not consistently clear because several ideas are crowded into long sentences, and some links are awkward or unclear. For example, “in 2010 it relocated near the hospital along with two road junctions” does not clearly distinguish the bus-station change from the roundabouts. The final paragraph repeats road changes already mentioned rather than adding a clearly organised detail. Use one paragraph for the overall changes and separate paragraphs for transport facilities and road access, with clearer references to each feature.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant task vocabulary, including “roundabout,” “bus station,” “car park,” and “links,” which allows the main changes to be understood. However, the range and precision are limited, and several noticeable word-choice, collocation, and spelling errors reduce clarity. Examples include “new adjustments have been done on road,” “public paking,” “devolpment,” and “hopital.” “Bus stop” is also used where the 2010 feature is a bus station, and “main road” is less precise than “Ring Road.” Aim for accurate map terminology and natural collocations such as “road improvements were made” and “a public car park was added.” Proofreading spelling and choosing exact labels from the map would make the description more precise.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a contrast with “however” and a clause beginning “which connects.” Some relationships are communicated, but grammatical errors recur and sometimes make the meaning difficult to follow. For example, “it can be seen that, the new adjustments have been done” has an unnecessary comma and an awkward passive construction; “it designed as only for staff parking” is missing a correctly formed verb; and “two road junctions which connects” has a subject–verb agreement error. There are also problems with articles and sentence boundaries, as in “In 2007 the bus stop was located…” and the comma splice in “in the past, there was a joint car park…, in 2010…”. Practise accurate past-tense descriptions and divide long comparisons into complete sentences.
