IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
This diagram compares the information about a city hospital, which was renewed in 2010, so features are updated in 2010.
Overall, the city hospital was the same in 2007, but some major updates were made in 2010. The ring road was in the same place, but the bus station was shifted to the left of the hospital road.
At first glance, we will see a ring road around the city hospital that was on the north. On the south side of the hospital, there was a public and staff car park for patients in 2007, but in 2010, the public park and staff park were separated; the old parking place was specified for the hospital staff, and public parking was shifted to the east of the hospital ring road.
There was a bus stop to the east of the hospital in 2007. On the west side of the hospital road, there was a bus station in 2010. In addition, two roundabouts were added at the junction of City Road and ring road.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You identify the main change from a shared car park to separate staff and public parking, and note the bus station and the unchanged ring road. These are relevant features, and the overview gives the reader a general sense of redevelopment. However, some details are incomplete or inaccurate: the bus stops were removed, rather than simply replaced by a bus station, and the two roundabouts are at the Ring Road–Hospital Road and City Road–Hospital Road junctions, not at City Road and Ring Road. The 2007 bus stops were on both sides of Hospital Road, not just to the east. This covers the task, but some features are less fully and precisely reported than others; accurate junction descriptions and a clearer account of the bus access would strengthen the summary.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and paragraphs describing the layout and changes. The sequence from general changes to parking and transport is broadly logical, and linking phrases such as “Overall” and “In addition” help guide the reader. Some progression is less clear because the description moves between years within sentences, and “At first glance, we will see” shifts into an unnecessary reader-focused framing. References such as “the old parking place” and “the hospital road” require the reader to infer exactly which location is meant. To improve, organise the details consistently by feature or by year, and use direct transitions such as “By 2010” to make comparisons easier to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for describing changes and locations, including “separated,” “specified,” “shifted,” and “junction.” The meaning is generally understandable, but several choices are imprecise or unnatural for map reporting. “Renewed” does not clearly describe the hospital-area changes, while “public park” can be mistaken for a recreational park rather than a car park. “Shifted to the left” is less precise than a compass direction, and “information about” is a vague way to introduce the maps. Aim for consistent, accurate terms such as “redeveloped,” “public car park,” and “to the west.” This would make the description more precise and show stronger control of collocation.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex forms, including the contrast in “but in 2010” and the relative clause “which was renewed in 2010.” Most sentences communicate the intended comparison, although some grammatical choices are awkward or inconsistent. For example, “we will see” introduces an inappropriate future viewpoint in a report about two past maps, and “the city hospital was the same in 2007” does not form a clear comparison. The sentence beginning “On the south side…” also combines several changes in a way that makes the relationships harder to follow. Use past-tense descriptions consistently and check articles and sentence boundaries; clearer, shorter comparisons would improve accuracy without sacrificing range.
