IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The given diagrams illustrate the changes that took place in the road acess and facilities surrounding City Hospital between 2007 and 2010.

Overall, it is evident that the layout of the hospital grounds underwent significant modernization, particularly regarding public transportation acess, parking facilities, and road infrastructure.

In 2007, acess to the city hospital from city road was provided via a single, straiugh hospital road. A combined staff and public car park was located on the east side area of the hospital road. while a single bus stop was situated further east outside the main perimeter. Ring road encircled the main hospital building.

By 2010, several major modification were implemented. A new roundabout was constructed on City Road to improve traffic flow, and an expanded bus station was added to the west side of the hospital road. The parking insfrastructure was also restructed, the original car park was divided, with the eastern side converted exclusively into public car park, while a seperate staff car park was established closure to the hospital entrance. Additionally, the southern section of hospital Road was curved to accommadate the new bus station layout.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You provide a clear overview of modernization and cover changes to transport, parking and roads, which addresses the main purpose of the maps. Several details are accurate, including the combined car park in 2007 and the later separation of staff and public parking. However, some key features are misreported or unclear: the 2007 map shows three bus stops on each side of Hospital Road, not one, and in 2010 the new public car park is east of Ring Road, while the former car park becomes the staff car park. The claim that the southern road was curved is not supported by the map; the main change is the addition of roundabouts at both ends of Hospital Road. More precise reporting of these features would make the summary more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response is organised into an introduction, an overview and separate paragraphs for the two years, giving the reader a clear progression from the original layout to the changes. Linking phrases such as “Overall,” “In 2007” and “By 2010” help signal this structure, and the information is generally easy to follow. To strengthen cohesion further, connect related changes more explicitly and avoid presenting an unsupported detail as part of the sequence. For example, the parking changes and the new public car park could be described together, while the road changes could be grouped around the two roundabouts. A few sentence boundaries, such as the full stop before “while,” also interrupt the flow.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a suitable range of vocabulary for describing map changes, including “underwent significant modernization,” “combined,” “divided” and “constructed.” These choices help communicate the broad transformation, and the meaning is usually clear. However, several spelling errors and imprecise or awkward choices reduce accuracy, such as “acess,” “straiugh,” “insfrastructure,” “restructed” and “closure to.” Some terms also misrepresent the map: “expanded bus station” is not established by the visual, and “curved” does not accurately describe the road change. Aim for precise map language and check spelling carefully; terms such as “introduced,” “designated” and “located” can describe changes without implying unsupported details.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the overview sentence beginning “Overall” and the clause “while a single bus stop was situated…”. Most of the intended meaning remains understandable, and the response shows some control of past-tense description. There are, however, some errors in sentence construction and punctuation. The sentence beginning “The parking infrastructure was also restructured” joins two independent clauses with only a comma; use a full stop, semicolon or conjunction. The lowercase “while” after a full stop is also incorrect, and “several major modification were” has a plural agreement error. More consistent sentence boundaries and agreement would improve accuracy while preserving your range.
