IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The two distinct plans illustrate and compare the routes leading to City Hospital in year 2007 and 2010.
Overall, it is evident from the sketch that access to the building was made much easier in the later year by the addition of multiple entry and exit roundabouts. Hospital staff got a distinct parking space from that for the general population.
People used to have only one entry point via Hospital Rd to enter the hospital building in 2007, along with a joint vehicle parking space for hospital staff and general public. In 2010, two roundabouts were constructed joining the main City Road via Hospital Road to the main building. Bus station was allocated a space across the Hospital Road in 2010, previously it was around the hopital road through out its length. There were two distnict parking grounds with one aimed for public located in North-East corner and that for staff across the hospital road opposite the bus station.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You identify the main change over time: the road layout was upgraded with two roundabouts, bus stops were replaced by a bus station, and parking was separated for staff and the public. The overview also captures the distinction between the shared parking in 2007 and the two designated car parks in 2010. Most locations are reported accurately, including the public car park in the north-east and the staff car park east of Hospital Road. However, the claim that the roundabouts made access to the hospital building “much easier” is an inference rather than a feature shown directly. The bus station’s position and connections could also be described more precisely. Overall, the key features are selected and compared clearly, with some scope for more exact reporting.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall progression: an introduction, an overview, and then details comparing the two years. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “In 2010,” and “previously” help the reader follow the changes. The main limitation is that the final paragraph places several separate changes into one long sequence, so the bus arrangements and parking locations are not as easy to distinguish as they could be. The reference in “that for staff across the hospital road” is also unclear about which side of the road is meant. Grouping the road and bus changes separately from the parking changes, and using clearer location references, would make the organisation more controlled and cohesive.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a suitable range of map vocabulary, including “roundabouts,” “entry point,” “parking space,” and “North-East corner,” and the meaning is generally clear. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “allocated” and “distinct.” However, some choices are imprecise or unnatural: “distinct parking grounds” is not the usual term for car parks, and “across the Hospital Road” does not clearly express the location. “Routes leading to” is also less precise than describing road access. Spelling slips such as “hopital” and “distnict” reduce accuracy. Aim for consistent, conventional map terms and check spelling; this would make the vocabulary more precise and natural.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and more complex structures, including the overview sentence beginning “Overall” and the comparison “People used to have…”. Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “Bus station was allocated a space” needs an article, and “joining the main City Road via Hospital Road to the main building” has an unclear grammatical relationship between the roads and the building. The sentence beginning “There were two distinct parking grounds” also uses an awkward construction for describing locations. Review articles with singular countable nouns and make sure long clauses clearly show what connects to what. Greater control of these patterns would improve accuracy while preserving your range.
