IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

This map compares the road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010. Overall, Urbanization of the city became clearer, since they built a bus station. They reinstructed the hospital road to facilitate access to the hospital. In 2010, there was only route to reach the city hospital, meanwhile in 2010, they rebuilt roads in a more convenient and suitable way by removing the bus stops, furthermore, adding a bus station, with two roundabouts to slow down traffic incase patients are walking down the hospital road. One near the entrance of the hospital where disabled or handicapped patients can be dropped off, while the other one is on the far end of the street. The main difference lies in the entrance change, whereas they made two entrances separating the car park between staff and the public. The public car park used to be within the hospital boundaries east south of the Ring Road. After renovations, the staff park remained where the old car park lied, while the public car park was structured to be east of the Ring Road, providing them with a separate entrance than the one for staff.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the two years and report several important changes, including the bus station replacing individual stops and the separation of staff and public parking. However, the overview is not consistently accurate: “In 2010, there was only route to reach the city hospital” appears to refer to 2007, and the claim that the roundabouts were added “to slow down traffic” or provide a patient drop-off point is not shown by the maps. The description of the public car park as previously “within the hospital boundaries” is also unclear; in 2007, the shared car park was east of Hospital Road. The response therefore covers the task only partially, with some key comparisons misreported or insufficiently clear. Focus on observable locations and changes, and give a concise, accurate overview.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0

The response has a recognisable opening and includes comparisons between the two maps, but the information is not arranged in a clear progression. The long middle section combines the road changes, bus facilities, roundabouts and an unsupported explanation of their purpose, making the relationships difficult to follow. Linking expressions such as “meanwhile,” “furthermore” and “whereas” are used, but they do not always connect the ideas accurately; “meanwhile” also introduces a repeated year rather than a contrast. There is no clear paragraphing to separate the overview from the detailed changes. Organise the report into an introduction and overview, followed by grouped details—for example, road and bus changes, then parking—and use simpler, more precise links.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You attempt a range of task-related vocabulary, including “roundabouts,” “entrance,” “separating” and “renovations,” so the main subject is generally understandable. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward: “reinstructed the hospital road,” “structured” for a car park, and “the old car park lied” do not express the intended map changes naturally. “Urbanization” is also not an appropriate description of the specific developments shown. These noticeable inaccuracies limit precision and sometimes make the reader work to infer your meaning. Use straightforward map language consistently, such as “was converted into,” “was relocated,” “was situated” and “provided access to,” and avoid adding abstract descriptions that the maps do not support.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt some complex sentence forms, including clauses beginning “while” and “whereas,” but control is uneven, and several sentences are difficult to parse. For example, “In 2010, there was only route … meanwhile in 2010” has a missing article and repeats the same year, while “One near the entrance … while the other one…” is a fragment rather than a complete sentence. The final sentence also shifts awkwardly between past and present forms (“remained,” “lied,” “was structured,” “providing”). Punctuation in the long sentence beginning “In 2010” further obscures the relationships between ideas. Build complete sentences, check articles and tense consistency, and divide long comparisons into shorter clauses.
