The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The map diagram compares the changes of road access to a city hospital between 2007 and 2010.
Overall, the parking space is only specialized for staff, whereas before it kept for the both publuc and staff. The two new roundabouts was built in the road access to the city hospital, while the east side of the map, the bus stop changed by another roundabout.
To commerce, on the east side of the city hospital, there was nothing buit there, however in the 2010 when car parking space were separated, the public car park has been built there. In the west of the map, the bus station has been introduced in the 2010 to further the accessiblity of road.
Eventually, the city road had enormous traffic jams, so in 2010 the two roundabouts was built there, one on the city road and another one near the city hospital. On the eastern side of the map, the bus stop was removed and roundabout had built in 2010.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the main changes: the shared car park became staff-only, a separate public car park was added, bus stops were replaced by a bus station, and two roundabouts were introduced. This gives the response a relevant overview and addresses the comparison between the two years. However, some details are unclear or inaccurate: the bus station is west of Hospital Road, not simply “in the west of the map,” and the eastern bus stops were removed rather than changed into a roundabout. The claim that there was “nothing” on the east side in 2007 overlooks the existing shared car park. The explanation that roundabouts were built because of traffic jams is not shown by the maps. Develop the spatial comparisons more precisely and avoid adding causes not supported by the visual information.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, an overview and two detail paragraphs, and it uses time markers such as “in 2010” to signal change. However, progression is weakened by repetition: the final paragraph repeats the roundabout and bus-stop changes already mentioned in the overview. Some linking expressions are inaccurate or awkward, particularly “To commerce” and “Eventually,” and the relationship between ideas in the overview is difficult to follow. Group the changes by feature or location, then report each once in a clear sequence. Use straightforward transitions such as “In addition” or “By 2010,” and make references like “there” explicit so the reader can follow which road or area is meant.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use relevant task vocabulary, including “roundabouts,” “car park,” “bus station” and “accessibility,” and you attempt to describe change with phrases such as “has been built” and “was removed.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unclear, including “changes of road access,” “specialized for staff,” “To commerce,” and “further the accessibility of road.” There are also spelling errors, such as “publuc,” “buit” and “accessiblity,” which reduce precision. Build a reliable set of map-description phrases—for example, “was converted into,” “was added to the east of,” and “was replaced by”—and check spelling and word forms before submitting.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a contrast with “whereas” and a clause beginning “so in 2010.” The main changes are generally understandable, but errors in agreement, articles and verb forms recur. For example, “The two new roundabouts was built” should use a plural verb, while “the public car park has been built there” does not fit the past-time comparison as naturally as “was built.” In “the bus stop was removed and roundabout had built,” the second clause needs a passive form and an article. Some sentences also have unclear clause structure, especially the overview sentence beginning “while the east side.” Practise accurate past-tense passive constructions and check subject–verb agreement in each sentence.
