IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The given maps illustrate the structural modification and road access changes made to a city hospital between the years 2007 and 2010.
Overall, the hospital site underwent substantial redevelopment, primarly focused on traffic management with two new roundabouts, introducing a new bus station and seperated park facilities for both public and staff.
In 2007, hospital road connectedd directly from city road to ring road with bus station on either side. By 2010, two new roundabout was introduced, one on city road and other near the ring road. However, the old bus stop was removed and replaced by large, dedicated bus station on the westearn side of the city hospital.
Redarding parking, in 2007, a single car park for both the staff and public was located on the east side of Hospital Road. By 2010, the setup of parking was segregated. The area near the Hospital Road was designated as a staff car park, while a new longer public car park was constructed on the west side, directly accesible to Ring road.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response gives a clear overview of the main changes: the addition of two roundabouts and a bus station, and the separation of staff and public parking. It also compares the 2007 and 2010 arrangements in relevant detail. Most locations are reported accurately, including the staff car park beside Hospital Road and the new public car park with access from Ring Road. However, there are a few imprecisions: the 2007 facilities were individual bus stops, not a “bus station,” and the new public car park was on the east side of Ring Road, not the west side. The description of the bus station’s connections could also be more precise. Overall, the key features are selected and communicated clearly, though these details limit precision.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response is organised effectively into an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs covering road and bus changes followed by parking. This gives the reader a clear progression through the comparison, and linking expressions such as “Overall,” “By 2010,” and “However” help signal relationships between the maps. The final paragraph also groups the parking changes logically. Some connections could be more exact: “the old bus stop” is singular even though the map shows several stops, and “the setup of parking was segregated” is less direct than a clear comparison of the two car parks. More precise referencing and transitions between related changes would make the cohesion more flexible and less reliant on repeated time markers.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
There is an adequate range of vocabulary for describing map changes, including “structural modification,” “traffic management,” “dedicated bus station,” and “segregated.” These choices help convey the overall redevelopment, and the meaning remains clear despite some inaccurate or awkward expressions. For example, “bus station” is used for the 2007 bus stops, while “longer public car park” is not a particularly precise description of the new facility. Several spelling errors—“primarly,” “seperated,” “westearn,” “Redarding,” and “accesible”—also reduce the accuracy of the vocabulary. Aim for precise map terminology and check spelling carefully; this would make the description more natural and exact.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple and more complex forms, including the overview sentence with “with two new roundabouts” and the contrast introduced by “while” in the parking paragraph. Most ideas are understandable, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “hospital road connectedd directly” has an incorrect verb form, and “two new roundabout was introduced” has a number and agreement error. The phrase “with bus station on either side” also needs an article and does not clearly express the intended relationship. Review subject–verb agreement, singular and plural forms, and articles, then proofread verb forms. Greater accuracy in these areas would strengthen the otherwise clear comparisons.
