IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The two maps show road access to a town hospital between 2007 and 2010.
Overall, in 2010, the road access to city hospital was changed with the relocation of some facilities. The bus stop was transformed into a bus station on the left of hospital road. The city hospital, ring road, hospital road and city road remained intact in their previous places.
In 2007, there were city hospital and ring road on the northern side of the road access. The hospital road was at the centre with bus stop and car parking for both staff and public. The city road was at the southern part and was linked to the hospital road.
In 2010, the public car park got detached from hospital road and was linked to city hospital. The staff car park remained on the right of hospital road as before. There was bus station instead of bus stop which was placed on the south western part of the road access.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the main change from individual bus stops to a bus station and note that the hospital and principal roads stayed in place. However, several important details are missing or inaccurate, which makes the account only partly complete. In 2010, the public car park was added east of the Ring Road with access from that road; it was not detached from Hospital Road and linked to the hospital. The staff car park was the existing shared car park, redesignated for staff, while the bus station was west of Hospital Road and connected to both ends of it. Include the two new roundabouts and describe these changes more precisely to make the comparison clearer and more fully developed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a clear basic structure: an introduction, an overview, and separate paragraphs for 2007 and 2010. This helps the reader follow the time sequence, and phrases such as “In 2007” and “In 2010” provide straightforward signposting. However, progression within the paragraphs is limited, and some details are grouped vaguely—for example, the 2007 paragraph lists the hospital, roads, bus stops and car park without clearly explaining their relative positions. The overview also repeats information that is then given again. Use more precise links and references, and organise each year’s changes around road layout, parking and bus facilities to create a smoother comparison.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “relocation,” “remained intact,” “linked,” and “transformed,” and the reader can generally understand the intended changes. Some choices are imprecise or do not fit the map description naturally. For example, “the bus stop was transformed into a bus station” suggests a direct conversion, whereas the stops were removed and a station was built; “got detached” is informal and inaccurate for the public car park’s new access; and “on the left” is less precise than “to the west.” Repeating “road access” and “car park” also limits flexibility. Use specific location and change vocabulary consistently to improve precision and style.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple sentences and more developed forms, including the overview clause “with the relocation of some facilities” and the contrast in “There was bus station instead of bus stop.” Most meanings remain understandable, but some grammatical errors and awkward constructions are present. Articles are missing in phrases such as “to city hospital,” “there were city hospital,” and “There was bus station”; use “the city hospital” and “a bus station” where appropriate. The sentence “In 2007, there were city hospital and ring road” also needs a more suitable structure, such as “The city hospital and Ring Road were located…” Continue checking articles, and vary sentence patterns while keeping the relationships between features clear.
