IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The two maps shows the layout of road access to city Hospital in the year 2007 and 2010.
Overall, the road acces to a city hospital has improved in general with the addition of roundabouts and with the modern space utilization techniques, the traffic flow is modernized.
Before in 2007, there was a collective car park for both the staff and the general public at the centre right of the hospital road with a same entrance. But now, the car park has been segregated and the old car park is now reserved for staff while a new car park for general public has been introduced at the right from the ring road with a separate entrance. The bus stop once was at the far east side of the hospital in 2007, is now brought nearer to the facility along the left side of the staff car park. Two roundabouts have been introduced along the city and hospital road for better routing of traffic and one other roundabout is situated at the far east side of the facility.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You identify the main changes: the shared car park becomes staff-only, a separate public car park is added, and roundabouts are introduced. The overview also recognises that access arrangements changed, which gives the response a clear central message. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear. The bus stops were removed and replaced by a bus station west of Hospital Road; they were not moved nearer to the hospital or placed along the left side of the staff car park. You also describe a roundabout at the facility’s far east side, whereas the two roundabouts are at the Ring Road and City Road junctions with Hospital Road. More precise reporting of the bus arrangements and locations would make the account more complete and accurate.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a recognisable structure, moving from an introduction and overview to a comparison of the car parks and road changes. Time markers such as “Before in 2007” and “But now” help distinguish the two maps, and the main points are generally easy to follow. However, the final paragraph combines several changes in a long sequence, and the bus-stop description makes the progression harder to understand because it suggests relocation rather than replacement by a bus station. Some linking is also mechanical, particularly the repeated use of “and.” Grouping the road-access changes separately from the parking changes, and using clearer references to each map feature, would improve the flow and precision.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a reasonable range of task-related vocabulary, including “segregated,” “reserved,” “introduced,” and “roundabouts,” and the reader can understand the broad changes. There are, however, several imprecise or unnatural choices: “modern space utilization techniques” is not a clear description of the map, while “traffic flow is modernized” makes an unsupported claim about the outcome. “The bus stop” is also inaccurate because the map shows multiple stops in 2007 and a bus station in 2010. Spelling errors such as “acces” and awkward phrases such as “at the right from the ring road” reduce control. Prefer direct, location-specific terms such as “east of Ring Road” and “bus station.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and complex structures, including a contrast with “while” and a relative clause beginning “which.” Meaning is usually recoverable, but some errors occur in basic agreement and sentence construction. For example, “The two maps shows” should be “The two maps show,” and “the bus stop once was …, is now brought” is an awkward, incomplete construction that needs restructuring. Articles and prepositions are also inconsistent in phrases such as “to city Hospital” and “at the right from the ring road.” The long final sentence joins several ideas without clear grammatical boundaries. Use shorter, controlled sentences and check subject–verb agreement, articles, and tense consistency.
